Maybe I’m just wrong then! But I thought they’d moved away from just using overseas players because you end up with a team made up entirely of islanders who didn’t count so they used the 5 non-fed trained players instead I thought they had to bring it in to stay on the right side of the ‘association of the EU’ rule. Wouldn’t be first time I’ve been convinced of something only to end up being completely wrong 😂 I think you were right all along and this is where this section comes in: www.rugby-league.com/flipbooks/2019-operational-rules-tiers-1-3/mobile/index.html#p=44. I didn’t explain it all that well before- you are allowed 5 overseas players and 7 non-fed players. So your Tongan chap doesn’t count on the ‘overseas quota’ but likely counts as ‘non-federation trained’. So you can mix and match between your Aus/NZ and the rest. This is why Leeds couldn’t sign Hastings (Aus) when they released Lolohea (Tongan) but could sign the lad from PNG. This is correct as far as I understand it.

Time to update the old ditty for the trip to Headingly in September.
'He's the star man not playing for the Reds, he moved over to Leeds and now just shakes his head'

A mate of mine who came to the game yesterday was a corporate guest at Leeds the previous weekend and he said Lui was there best player but was still shocking and that he is obviously playing on 1 leg.
When you factor in how well Lolohea played and how he was beaming at the end of the game more and more I feel we've got massively got the best part of the deal.

I agree. Leeds fans reckon Tui’s problem is defence. Weve yet to see whether that’s a problem. Same thing said about Welham but as long as the good outweighs the bad,it’s ok. Which brings me nicely to Olpherts !

Leeds fans I know also told me how his kicking was bad. I did tell them at the time that Lui’s wasn’t great either but I honestly think Tui’s kicking has been an upgrade especially into the in goal area. He’s still missing that bit of game changing magic that Lui has but he’s younger and quicker and I think we’ve done alright. The big test is next season when there will be more pressure on him to create.

Best case scenario - Lolohea is furious and sets out to prove a point. With far better service from Hastings and highly motivated, he bamboozles defences and Salford step up a gear, solidifying their grip on the top 5. Teams fear us. Lui can't perform outside Myler and Leeds sink to the bottom of the table. Old Trafford beckons for the mighty Red Devils, and the prize money allows us to sign Lolohea and Hastings for next year after Leeds go down and Lolohea becomes a free agent. An era of domination is ushered in. The ground is no longer big enough for all the fans. Watson becomes Queensland coach in his spare time. Leeds play off against Hunslet at the bottom of the Championship and go down again. Bump. I was a little closer to the mark than I thought! Shame I got the Leeds bit wrong.
