It was a good game and their killer instinct and a bit more experience won it for them. They killed us for pace out wide and as good as Sau and Johnson have been we definitely need an injection of pace at the other centre.
But all credit to the boys and a special mention to Evalds he didn't really put a foot wrong and that Burgess tackle wow, not many hunt him down like that once he's clean away.
Just hope we get our heads up now for the 8's.

Team and fans brilliant today. We played new combinations with 2 new players, it's just a pity they hadn't played together another 3 or 4 times, and sadly Koppy not match fit.
We have to learn how to play on the edge of offside and obstruction like Wigan do. O Loughlin, Williams and Gelling play it to perfection, thats why we need two refs to cut out the things one ref can't see. Although the way Tomkins and a couple of others were in the refs eared seemed to have 3 or 4 at times(that has to stop) Tomkins never MoM.
Just a point. A Salford player was obstructed, over the line in the act of scoring a try. The Wigan player was penalised and sin-binned. Just watched it a couple of times on re- play. Surely, according to the rules that's and 8 point penalty try. What do others think? Not a biased view as I thought the Wigan disallowed try was very marginal, although Evalds speed, memorable.
I don't want to moan and bring in the negatives but I totally agree with a lot of what CharlyB said. RU do the video ref much better. The 3 incidents should have been highlighted and the on field ref make a decision there and then. Not leave it until next week when Wigan are in the final and Wanes been in the ear of the Panel. Chase got 8 matches for what Powell did. Sadly Wigan do play a cowardly game when it's going wrong for them, remember the grand final, it's in Wigan's genes.

Chaliesbotty makes a fair point. Nothing excuses the refs mistakes and I agree with a couple of the decisions he highlighted, but I don't think the late tackle on Carney amounted to much and the tackle on Tasi seemed worse as Tasi twisted in the tackle. On balance though, the Joe Burgess disallowed try which I'm sure Thaler guessed at,and the Tomkins penalty and sin binning came at crucial times and,in other non televised games, would have gone against us.

If we can bring in 4-5 new faces in as opposed to the 10-12 of previous years then we can build. Think an annual overhauling of squad does nothing. If we can improve 1% next year then job done. Given we massively exceeded expectations this year we have to be more than satisfied. Totally agree. It's all about identifying where we need to strengthen and adding quality over quantity. We have been very fortunate on the injury front this year compared to previous years and I'd just like to see a little more depth and some extra quality in a couple of positions. Like you say the team have massively exceeded expectations and it's going to be a huge challenge for all concerned to keep the momentum going in 2018. As the previous couple of years have proved there can be huge swings in how a team performs between one year and the next in Superleague.

Next door but one, is a closet Pie eater, he’s never been to a game of course, ‘just read a book about them, well he drove past our front window this morning beeping his horn and gesticulating, and in return, I automatically flicked two Vs at him and mouthed ‘F*ck off’ back – he looked quite shocked. For a moment there I was back at the game.

Some thoughts on yesterday.
Todd Carney when needed shows what he can do, his kicking game was as good as I've seen from a Salford player in a very long time.
Vatuvei looks like the beast but sadly Wigan had worked him out even before he took his first hit up, if we are going to play him as a battering ram other teams are simply going to gang up on him and leave him just about crippled.
Krasniqi had the look of a player who is off at the end of the game and wouldn't be surprised if it were to Wigan, should be the next resigning as he is immense when selected.
McCarthy well bugger me what a but he looks to be, everyone has been all over Vatuvei coming and he's gone under the radar rather, when him and Flash are both fit we have 2 excellent ball playing tackling machines on the park.
Evalds/GOB, Think Niall put that one to bed yesterday, never put a foot wrong and although I think it was a try his track back & cover tackle were world class.
It was odd that the Doc came onto the pitch and pretty much ignored the fans and was in Vatuveis ear then acknowledged the Salford fans in the seating area.
The support was brilliant, more noise than Wigan, more passion than Wigan and we from what I saw we must have some brilliant dartists amongst us as what a hell of an accurate throw that was. Whoever it was needs identifying and then the police get involved, pretty sure they could charge the person/people involved with assault, that then might stop the bell ends.
On the subject of the knobs throwing things pretty much guarantee that these will be people vehemently anti relocation and name change, when they might have been better thinking about is by doing what they did they have given the Doc more ammunition to fire back when the decision is made public.
Proud beyond words of every one of the red men yesterday, got beaten by a better Wigan team, did highlight though that we must get a great deal more pace in the backline if we are going to progress.

Nothing much more I can add on what's already been said - great effort from all the players, we were just beaten by a better Wigan team on the day, who took their chances and seemed to manage the game really well. They're one of those teams which just knows how to do it in the big games, and that was the difference I think. We're getting there, slowly but surely, but it's going to take some time. I think the team can take a lot of confidence from the game yesterday; hopefully it'll put us in good stead for the Super 8s. If we play our cards right, we could have another crack at a semi final in September - yesterday will have been a good experience if we manage to do it. Great following and noise made by our fans, top atmosphere . Also, does our top 8 finish mean we enter the Cup a round later next season?

We did have two of the fastest wingers in Superleague and they left. The problem is we don't have creative centre's with pace so we have no choice but to try and run throw opponents than around them. I just felt we were lacking a couple of players with that spark and acceleration to find space and break the line yesterday.

Nothing more than a hunch but think that MCB is destined to return, Johnson seems to have lost a yard of pace since his bulk up, stick him in the centres with a speedster outside him and they could cause havoc. Just hope Olpherts is as good as he looks as we might have unearthed another Briningesque lower league gem.

I should first apologise to Todd Carney, he is class. We need to see a bit more of it but that could be down to structures and game plans. References to Wigan's 'big match mentality' are both right and wrong. They do the little things right in the big games, but they do them in every game. For example, Tomkins sin-binning. It looked harsh but the decision was spot on. He went for a 50/50 ball initially but when he realised he wouldn't get it, he immediately thought "If I can't get it, neither can you!" and pushed the Salford player away from the ball enough to make sure we didn't get the try. That is contact without the ball. That is a professional foul. That is a penalty and a yellow card. It isn't a 'penalty try' because it wasn't clear that the Salford player would get to it. Tomkins just made absolutely sure he didn't. Correct decision even though it looked harsh. Little things like that make the difference between winning and losing. The Wigan 'no try' was also absolutely correct. Evalds did brilliantly and caused the Wigan winger to loosen his grip on the ball. Contact with the ground caused the ball to come free. That contact was before the try line and 'No try - knock on' was spot on, though it was a close call. Well done to Niall. Personally, I thought Gelling was a bit unlucky. I thought he tried to duck under the ball, but it hit him. I don't think he deliberately headed it away, though I wouldn't put it past him. It was a very good game. I'm disappointed, but not disheartened. I judge us to be about 5% off winning something. Maybe when Carney has more time in the play maker role for us and our injured players come back, we'll be there. Onwards and upwards. Let's give it our all for a top 4 finish, then two sudden-death games.

Just a point. A Salford player was obstructed, over the line in the act of scoring a try. The Wigan player was penalised and sin-binned. Just watched it a couple of times on re- play. Surely, according to the rules that's and 8 point penalty try. Two points on this... 1. He either has to have actually put the ball down and scored for that to happen. So he actually has to score, then Tomkins gets penalised for the infringement. And/or... 2. The ref conclusively sees that a dead-cert scoring opportunity is impeded. In this case, it wasn't a dead-cert that McCarthy would have scored. So it was the correct decision.

I agree Evalds had a very good game defensively, but as an attacking force he wasn't seen and imo Gareth O'Brien is better on the whole.
Evalds = very good defensively, very quick and finishes very well. O'Brien = good defensively, quick enough, kicks and passes with confidence (i.e. more creative)
It's all subjective I know, but I think Watto has gone a little negative since he took O'Brien out of the team, especially as he can play 1, 6, 7 & back-up 9. I can't remember from the melee of the yesterday's game if O'Brien even came on at all?

Yes he came on right near the end, not sure who for? Tomkins did big minutes yesterday, thought Obrien might play back up hooker but if I remember correctly krasniqi came on for Tomkins? Missed brinning massively.
Thought Niall was great yesterday, not sure obrien would have stopped some of the tries evalds did. I really like them both though, it's a nice problem to have!

Does anyone know if Greg Johnson got a knock prior to the McIlorum try? Watching the highlights he looked very laboured in his pursuit to prevent the score.
