Don't think it's a new tactic getting a back to take the ball up early in the tackle count, Offiah did it plenty for Wigan and pretty sure Fata Sini didn't mind an early trundle.
What does upset me is that Justin Carney seems to have become a little one dimensional, give old thunder thighs the ball and watch him try and skittle players, would be happy seeing him feint and try to go round someone occasionally.
As we've discovered in another thread Johnson is pretty rapid over the 100 meters so why not mix it up occasionally with a very early kick in the tackle count, now we have someone with the prowess of Todd Carney doing it once or twice would put the fear of God into opposition full backs as the modern trend is to defend in the line early in the count to give a 13 man defensive line, that kick by Carney and chase by Johnson could be lethal.
As for the length of time watching Salford I'm 46 but have been watching them for at least 150 years (well it feels like it most of the time anyway).
Would love to know Scoot what you think of the current rules are not an improvement from the 'good old days'?

I'd be interested as well as "speccies" comments often annoy me: two I've grown to ignore as they really irritate are "Linesman, wave your flag as he's off-side" (sic ad infinitum) and "Ref, forward" when the pass has been affected by wind or because it's a high pass and was directed behind.

I'm just a very happy red devils fan at the mo and wish all my fellow Salford fans a happy Easter. Let's hope we can turn over Leigh and have a good crack at the cats. Let's just all enjoy the now!

It's not a new tactic to have the backs taking the ball up early in the tackle count. What seems to be new is that Salford are doing it systematically. It's not just one of the backs putting his hand up for an early drive, it's happening in pretty much every set of six coming out of our own half: the first two drives are taken by the outside backs, usually the wingers, irrespective of where the forwards are or how long they've been on the field. The only exception to this seems to be straight from a kick off, when the first drive is usually taken by a prop.
Similarly, the first drive after a penalty kick to touch is taken by one of the backs (usually a centre) who taps it to himself and goes.

I guess I may well have been watching the game for a lot longer than you, mate. I have been watching Salford for 62 years, first watched Salford in 1954, surely you can't be older than me. Ok Scoot. I'll give you that one. My first memory was a game at Central Park in 1967 when Frank Collier got sent off. So 50 years for me. Fair play to you. My Dad can beat you though. His first game was in 1929 and I still try to get him to at least one game a year. But just back to that topic, can't say I have ever noticed a team 'plod back' into the line quite like Salford did against Saints.

Would love to know Scoot what you think of the current rules are not an improvement from the 'good old days'? Hi Michiganred, I don't like the new interpretation on the obstruction rule, it leaves it down to the refs interpretation. As it was before you could use the post, the referee and a player, to dodge round, as long as he stood still or did not TAKE a player out The best 'rule' change was going to ten yards at the PTB. It quicken the game up, made it faster and took out the thugs from the game. Made it a lot easier to ref and touch judge. I used to play at loose forward and used to like my option of packing down or being able to detach from the scrum, whenever I chose to do so,making an extra defender in our 20 or extra attacker in opponents 20 The scrums , don,t know they used to be a mess with cheating to get the ball, and there used to be 17 offences you could penalise at the scrum. They now get the game started quicker so we can get on with the game. But I don.t think you can do away with them, they are a breather for the players and the ref. Do you think it would be a good idea for people on this site to have a get together and have a friendly chin wag on all things SRD possibly before or after a game?

I'm up for a pre-match or post match pint. Would be good to put a face to the name!
Me and @michiganred are both South Standers. You can't miss him being 8ft tall and you can smell him a mile off.
Me on the other hand... I'm the good looking ginger one.

I'm always up for a pre match drink or two, we should try and do it one Sunday afternoon game. Widnes 30th April maybe? As for GT/Mr Mafia different people but both with the debilitating affliction of gingerness. uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ginger(fully expect to be threatened with a ban again )

Salfordslim were you the artist previously known as Saleslim? Guilty as charged! Had to change my username on The Turkey due to an overzealous Wigan mod banning me from their board (touchy lot are them pie eaters☺). So changed to SaleSlim as was living down there at the time. Back in God's country now tho so back to my rightful name.☺👍 I do miss the old RL Fans site but with all the bell-ends posting the move to here had to be done. Looking at Leigh's forum recently it looks like the loonies have taken over their asylum big time!
