I'm all for promoting youth into the team and am disappointed our 5 in 5 initiative never got off the ground. However, to think a young man who has never played a full or semi professional game ( l1/champ) or even played in front of anything more than, at tops, a couple of hundred people. Will then all of a sudden be put in as one of the key pivots in a SL team is madness. His nerves and adrenaline means he will be shot after about 15 mins.
As mentioned he needs to go on loan for a bit first before he even comes Into any consideration for catching the bench. Let alone against one of the teams we will have targeted a win against
Come on.
Get him out for some game time and get him in the squad for 2nd half of season.
Gotta bring them through correctly and not just chuck them in after an injury or ban to someone. It can be more detrimental than positive to his development

Ryan B free to play on Sunday. Good News 👍 Great news. I can't believe Watts and McIlorum got 4 games. I wonder how long these ridiculous bans will last once attendances drop, TV audiences drop, and the spectacle is ruined.

How would anyone know if he's s nerves would be shot after 15 minutes?
Warrington played a 17 year old against Catalan away from home. That's a tough place to go. He did fine. And wing isn't a hiding spot like it was many years ago.
It's a mentality more than age thing. He either has the attitude and mentality or he doesn't. Rowley named him 18th man above other players at weekend and said he's happy to back him if he needed to start. He's obviously seen something to give him confidence.
Would it be ideal to send him out on loan? Maybe. Maybe it's better to keep him around and training with the first team squad. I just don't buy the age or experience arguements in any sport. Experience can only be gained by playing, and playing at Barrow away, doesn't prepare you for SL. Just like a game at Salford City doesn't prepare a player for Old Trafford or the Etihad. It's a totally different level and environment. As for age, it's a number. It's more about maturity. I've taught 17 year olds who are very mature. I've also taught people over 30 who I wouldn't trust in the supermarket with a shopping list.
Now, I haven't advocated starting him. I'd have rolled with Atkin if Brierley wasn't available, but suggesting Connell isn't daft.

Ref is J Vella. Anybody know anything about him or her? I didn't know who this was either.
I notice that another ref Jack Smith was described as having the marquee gig.
This is an interesting idea for a sport that wishes to be, construct and sell itself as competitve from top to bottom, and shows RL is a sport that can't achieve this goal. All games need to be packaged as the best thing since sliced bread.

Just watched the replay of their match with wigan. They didn't look much of anything tbh. But losing a player had s big impact. They also move the ball really slowly and am still non the wiser who their half backs are having watched that

He (James Vella) is a Ref who was promoted from the Championship Referees For games at the start of the 2024 Superleague season. He's been referring in the UK for around 4/5 years. From Sydney 🇦🇺 . www.rugby-league.com/get-involved/match-officials/full-time-match-officials/james-vella

I blame that on the different time zone I'm in , If I had replied in GMT, I would have answered before the question was asked.

By the way Vella has been OK when I`ve seen him - touching wood. Looks like Harold Steptoe.

Bit nit-picky there. All sport has marquee fixtures. City v Utd will always be more marquee than Sheffield Utd v Burnley. Bit unfair to say that every fixture should be equally exciting and dynamic, as that is not an attainable thing.

Not at all Carny, it's a question of marketing like you want everyone to think, it doesn't mean selling what you really think it requires offering what you'd like people to think, and what you want people to you think. True it's all smoke and mirrors but the RFL has undersold our game in the whole of forever. That is apart from odd instances like the Offiah test poster.
You don't have to have the biggest elephant in the universe you just have to keep saying it again and again until even people who doubt your claim come to think it may be true!
Unless you only want the top 5-6 clubs to be the only ones with decent crowds and therefore IMG crietria assured in which case you could work at the RFL!
