And it’s a shame I even have to talk about the ref as the skill on show by both teams was outstanding. Could have been a classic

I very rarely complain about referees but I thought Smith had a shocker tonight. The sin bin was extremely harsh followed by the penalty against Sneyd which was incorrect. I’ve never liked the six again rule and tonight it was extremely unevenly applied. The 8 point tries were really poor decisions. Esp the 1st one, see them in pretty much every game. That said. We weren’t good enough in the first 10 minutes after half time. No excuse for losing a half 30-0 despite the dodgy refereeing. I thought going for 2 when we got the penalty in the 2nd half was the wrong decision. Too many knock ons from kicks We were very good in the first half and should have seen the game out. Sin bin was definitely harsh. There are tackles very similar in every game that aren't even penalised. The 8-point tries were also a joke. If that's the benchmark then we should be seeing them in more or less every game this season. Sneyd definitely hit the arm but my assumption was that it was a penalty for offside, which he was... still I pointed this out on another thread that those offsides are NEVER given. Every team is offside on EVERY play when at their own line. It's frustrating that Sneyd hits the arm and gets penalised. Agree on the two point attempt, the players wanted to go for it and I think you should trust them. We hadn't had a lot of ball at that point and had just made a break and had a little momentum. It would have still been two scores.

Against KR we were very poor. Last night was different. Try defending set after set and winning a game, 2 x dubious penalty try's and a soft yellow card (Their winger Thewliss is a bitch moaning about Dupree to Smith). The most one sided Ref display for a long time, funny we've had Smith twice (Leigh and Wire) and had two sin bins. The Ref turned the game on its head, yes we can defend better but his decisions we're pivotal. Even those not supporting Salford called out Jack Smith see Social Media.
Credit to Dupree and Longstaff thought they did well.
As has been said v Hull I'd swap Cross for Watkins at centre and drop Brierley - for the 2nd week in a row he has been poor and denfensively is all over on kicks - play Burgess or Costello at one, other than the try he did very little in attack for a third pivot, simply not good enough - those errors are contributing to games being lost.

No interest in discussing referees as it is a cop out, which takes accountability away from the team and just a lazy way for people to take out their frustration.
Overall we played some good stuff and we played some dumb stuff. Lack of respect for the ball in 2nd half caused a severe lack of ball, which in turn meant more defending, more fatigue which leads to more pens. Vicious cycle that saw it blow out a bit at the end.
Brierley had a bit of a mare and agreed his short kicking game defence needs to improve. Currently he is always going to from hero to zero each match due to the way he plays.
On the cross/Sio tried conceded piece. Very obvious stat,I think as they play on the right side of our defence. Most players are right handed so the attacks are usually more frequent and potent when a team attacks right to left.
Still look like we don't have a plan B. Times yesterday when starved of ball we are playing Rowleyball in 1st tackle from a scrum. Need to be a bit smarter.
Love Rowleyball and don't want to Change it, but need a slight tweek for certain situations.
Still very early days, but feel that was an improvement on last week and is we can tighten up over next few weeks should start racking up some wins. Other than Williams, I didn't see anything about Warrington that would worry me too much on return leg.
Fingers crossed no bans.
Onwards and upwards

Onwards and upwards This is nicely summed up, although I have to disagree in regards to the ref. The 8 point tries were kind of irrelevant in my opinion however the sin bin after all the six agains completely killed not only us but the game as a spectacle. I think it was something like 18 tackles in a row we defended shortly before the sin bin and we were just shattered so gaps and mistakes started to appear. Wire still might have come back and won but the first half was 2 evenly matched teams going at it full pelt and the skill level was outstanding, one of the best halves of RL I’ve watched live for a good while, could have been a classic with both teams at full strength. Did anyone watch on Sky? Were all the set restarts justified or was it as one sided as it felt in the stands? Overall I saw enough in the first half to make me think we can get in the playoffs (barring injuries) if we just sort the kick defence and hold onto the ball in our own half when we need to play conservatively. I’m right behind this team

Onwards and upwards Do not disagree with some of the observations on the team but the fact is Smith had a material impact on the outcome of this game. When is the last time you saw 2 x Penalty tries in a game for nothing? Another cheap sin binning. I guarantee that Smith would not make those decisions if it was Saints, Leeds, Wigan etc.

Jack Smith last year was appalling, this match inept. This totally affected the match sadly and ruined potentially a classic RL match. Whether it was Salford is irrelevant. This is one of the main reasons RL is failing as a sport…disgrace….and still Ben Thaler doesn’t get a match
I’ve never heard Rowley have a go at a ref in this manner before

While Smith certainly had an impact on the game we put ourselves too often in a position for him to make bad calls. We played the first half excellently, and pretty much did the total opposite in the second half. Refereeing decisions often swing with momentum and we successfully squashed our own momentum every time. This very much feels like it was us that lost the game rather than Wire being world beating. I'm sure that the lads will be smarting after such a dire second half. I think Sneyd and Croft should have tried to steady the ship early on with smarter sets and made Wire work much harder than they had to.
It's frustrating because we should have won that game with ease after the first half.

Yes MTR it’s the sport of RL that lost last night sadly….I just get sick of this shambles…it just happened to be our Club on the end of it
The RU refs with their video support are in a completely different and much higher league. The interaction is superb between on field ref and video.. We will get what we deserve…people walking away from the sport…remember people travelled and paid money to be confronted by something which was not even mediocre by a supposedly highly trained and well paid official
I’m not criticising the officials because it’s Salford , it’s because it’s RL again becoming a joke. The man needs to be stood down and retrained.

I do agree with a good deal of what is being said about the performance of the Team and it shows we’re getting there…big improvement on last week…in spite of
As Rowley, he feels sorry for them

Last night we snatched defeat from the Jaws of victory Yes the referee was bad their again I think most of them are bad,but they don't make us miss tackles or make the wrong decisions they are our own doing what makes it hurt more is that Hull KR and Warrington Are average at best. As for going on about Union referee's some of them are know better than what we have got Wakefield now a must win I am afraid.

Dixon the big difference between RU and RL officiating is that game is monitored by the video ref…any missed infringements are then brought to the attention of the ref…he then consults with his linesmen, video ref, then watches it on screen and they jointly make the right decision
Smith was a rabbit in the headlights, couldn’t stand the pressure, lost it and caved in..But he had the same support around him as any RU ref..
Its all about getting the decisions right and being consistent…which generally happens in RU

What I also thought was bizarre about the video ref was the try where they checked for offside on the kick. The replay was shown and the the player catching the ball wasn't even in the shot and yet the vid ref asked for no extra angles and just moved onto the knees going in from Dupree.Er.....bearing in mind he was 10m ahead of all his teamates
