Very disappointing. We seem off the pace but I'm not worried as far as the season goes as I think it'll come. Plenty to work on though and hopefully we can get back to the type of rugby we played last year.
Lots of possession in the first 20 mins but we look a bit out of sync with our lines, passing, and timing. I thought it was off last week but it was more evident today.
We didn't respect the ball all game which constantly gave Hull KR field position - passes that weren't on, offloads that weren't there, King thinking he's a 6, balls too late at the line which are tough to catch, loose carries. There's nothing wrong with keeping the ball, driving hard, get down quick on your front and fight to play the ball, give Ackers options. Earn the right to swing the ball out.
Giving them possession for the first try epitomised our errors. Bit of a break and played the ball on the right, swung the ball all the way left, Brierley should have give it Lafai for a two on one but ran him out, Lafai goes inside option, Brierley has the defender committed but doesn't pass it to Burgess until the player is on him and he loses the ball - timing. Then errors on top of this allowed Abdul to take over the game. Particularly the lack of concentration from the kick-off after wemgot back in the game against the run of play. I don't think we go out of our half after that.
They defended us well throughout and Abdul showed what a great kicking game looks like. He tore us to part with his short kicks and getting repeat sets. I think the weakest part of Brierley's game is his short kick positioning and with our aggressive defence out wide it leaves those holes for the short kick without much cover from the three quarters.
I love Lafai but I wish he'd take the outside more often instead of stepping inside - there were two occasions when outside was the better option. He still had a very good game and I thought Burgess went well too and I don't think it'll be long until we see more production down that edge, especially once Stone beds in more.
We definitely lack punch in the middle. Luckley and Sue punched our line. Shame we didn't manage to keep Luckley. As I said before, if you're not punching holes and driving defenders backwards, just get down quick on your front and play the ball. I hope a big prop becomes available at some point... maybe Sidlow will make a difference in games like these?
I think we'll get there. The players showed their class last year. Hopefully we click earlier this season. Really disappointed on the night when I thought it was winnable but I'd still back us to come good if we stay injury free.
