Not disheartened at all. Walmsley scored their only `proper` try - the others were from Up & Unders/Ref mistake. Lets be fair these lads still introducing themselves to each other. Quite heartening overall though as Slim said Inu well off the pace but lets hope its a one off.

Can’t understand sarge at fb, has a mistake or 2 every game, and he’s far far better than kear at centre. Early days but not impressed with the decisions made so far. Try not to be too negative but that was very disappointing I'll give Marshall the benefit of the doubt. There's no other coach that has to start a new job with almost an entirely new side. There's usually a backbone in place, but he hasn't even had that to be fair. He can only go off what he sees behind the scenes. I'm with you in regards to the FB position. Unless Escare is carrying a knock it seems a bit of a baffling decision. There's certainly scope for a change of personnel in some positions for next week...

The positives Taylor has huge work ethic, Sarge going forward other than the error and thought Kear was decent, Livett was very involved. The negatives; Lannon - gives away penalties too often and is out of position at times - we have better options at 2nd row. Inu had an awful game but will improve. Saints look very good - we conceded 3 soft tries (two walk ins). Will take away it was better than last year, Brown looked sharp and we have players to come back however need more composure with the ball.

Ackers injured Escare dropped Sarginson not a full back and Dr Jekyl Inu is certainly Mr Hyde....awful Pack great but need a hooker Backs need organising
Their 2nd try a joke, some poor decisions generally against us, and had to watch with no sound; the Chuckle zbrothers back to their normal dirge
But Week 1, new team, good defence, except for Inu and Sarginson so we move along
Good potential and can only improve as tplay more together

Of course, certainly not writing us/him off. There were plenty of positives in there particularly defensively. He has a massive job on and I’m still confident we’ll do well, am sure I’ll feel more so tomorrow! If escare and ackers are injured fair do’s, but if not strange choices.

I think all the comments above have pretty much covered it. We're a new team playing the champions who've brought in 2 or 3 top quality recruits and we had a few players playing out of position/missing. We mixed it with them for large parts of the game and the killer was the dumb high shot (must be the first of Lannon's career😏) on the last tackle pretty much straight after we'd scored.
Glad we're not all doom and gloom and we're all realistic about the situation. It's nigh on impossible for a newly assembled team to gel from the off so we'll know where we're at 5/6 games in.
Onwards & upwards!👍

It seems that Escaré was fit but not selected. If he doesn’t fancy him,Marshall should try Costello. Slightly worrying that the coach didn’t know what we all know, that Sarge is a tremendous player but he’ll give away a try a match with his mistakes. Can’t fault his effort and commitment. As good as Kear is,his value is as a squad player as there’s never any end result from him. He certainly shouldn’t be our first choice, starting centre.

Anyone wishing we'd have been playing Wigan tonight?😳 😂 Think we would have beaten Wigan. Their front row is bang average and with their half backs and most of their three quarters missing we defo would have done them

I did not expect us to win and we probably played the winners of the competition, so a free hit,now the seasons starts.

Just watched the post-match press conference.
Seems that Ackers was unable to be picked due to having to self-isolate, but should be available next week. Marshall said that they decided on Sarge at FB instead of Escare because of Saints attacking threat they thought Sarge would be better suited in a key defensive area. Says that Escare is a massive attacking threat and will be in contention when the FB role demands it. Marshall also says how immense Elijah Taylor was and was his MoM.
Sarge has a slight knock, Mossop has a slight knock on his dodgy shoulder.

Wonder why he didn't play Costello who's been and able sub at centre and full back for Saints?

Wonder why he didn't play Costello who's been and able sub at centre and full back for Saints? I think cos he thinks Kear and Sarge are better than Costello

Not watched it back yet and I’d had a few scoops when I was watching it but my view
- too many individual mistakes as others have said. Inu has games like that in him and I’m surprised so many people overlook it - loads of effort in defence, first 20 I though we had a faster line speed and turned more players on their backs than we ever did under Watto - but a bit scrappy in defence as a team especially as they tired. I think this will because of new partnerships and first proper game - disappointing in attack. Saints defence is very very good but the reds were too impatient and I think, naive. Trying to pass it wide before we’d gone forward won’t work against a defence like Saints. You need a retreating defence to give you space. Felt like we didn’t want to do the hard work of driving forward before we tried the lazy way of trying to go round them. Too many offloads where there was no benefit of doing it, just risk. All this is the worrying side of the game as it suggests it’s come from the coach and I can’t see it working consistently at SL level - but if they can get dominant in the middle then we could be a really exciting attacking side. We must have made more offloads last night than in the 2 previous years combined - we’ll get a better idea when we play teams that aren’t Saints and when they’ve had more games together
