What did Evalds do so wrong at Leigh? GOB has been found out, never takes the line on and is risky under the high ball. There were lots of bad performances at Leigh BMM was totally absent Hauraki atrocious and Carney well let's not dwell on that one. If the team cannot get themselves together for a CC semi final then I really fear for the 7 games after that. Im not talking just about the leigh game, i fear his side always gets targeted when he plays on the wing. Castleford though was a good example of his defence. Shocking

The games against Cas, Hull and Leeds all the majority of the points were scored against Evalds wing. We've concluded he isn't a winger and his positional play when playing there is woeful. He definitely won't be on the wing for the semi as hopefully it'll be Johnson and Vatuvei, so the argument is who plays FB - him or GoB.
They both have their merits and negatives, tbh I think their both suspect in defence, I think their both equal under the high ball, so it's what they bring to the team going forward and moving around the park. Evalds is probably the best support player we have and has the knack of being on the end of almost everything. GoB brings other players into it with his link play to the second rowers and centres, he's also the organiser from the back where as Evalds isn't as focal. Either way it's a tough decision, but we have played the better rugby with GoB in the side.
What ever decisions made and who ever plays, if we lose in the eyes of both player supporting camps it will have been the wrong decision - for poor IW it's a lose / lose situation - so Ian no pressure please ensure we win this one.

I know Lui limped off on Friday but has it been confirmed he is definitely out? If he is out it's a Wigan win unfortunately

If Lui is out, I'd play O'brien at 6.
Creative Good passer of the ball Something Wigan will have not seen. Salford win

The team plays better with OBrien at full back. Evalds will be unlucky but he won't be in the 13.

I agree that we play better with O'brien at full back, but teams have cottoned onto that method.
The problem positions will be 6 & replacement 9, if both both Lui & Brinning are unfit.
With O'brien at 6 we could use Carney as replacement 9 and Evalds at fullback.
I think that combination is better than Evalds at 1, Carney at 6 and Krisnici as replacement 9
(Krisnici's passing is not good enough and would make distribution at the ptb slow and inaccurate)
I rest my case, M'lord.

What are our hooking options on Sunday as assume Brinning won't make it? If Lui is out then we have a decision to make at 1, 6 and the bench hooker spot. For me the options are... Gaz FB, Carney 6, Niall sub Hooker Niall FB, Gaz 6, Carney sub Hooker I'd much rather have a scooting 9 on the bench so for me that means option 1. With Brining and Lui fit then 1 of the above (prob Evalds) drops out of the 17 but looks like they'll both be out so for me I'd let Niall loose off the bench and hope that Carney can show his undoubted class at SO from the start. Then again I'm sure I'll get shot to pieces for this! Edit: just seen Jimmy's post and would prefer Olsi at 13 or on the bench to cover the pack.

Just to add that I don't think Niall's defence would be half as bad down the middle. It's his decision making out wide which is the major issue and I think he could make an impact on the game at 9.

We've seen him at wing and centre and be awful in defence. It's a stretch to hope that he'll be better infield, especially in a cup semi

You are Evalds Grandad, and I claim my £5... You are Obriens dad and I claim £10. Doesn't work though, dixon. I haven't lorded one player over any other on here. Look at the O'Brien/Evalds thread. I like them both. Different play styles for different situations, whereas you stubbornly refuse to accept anything that interrupts your Evalds vinegar strokes. You are the Theresa May of Deviltalk...Evalds at the back. Strong and stable. Carney the best halfback at the club, strong and stable. We wont win anything without accepting more austerity. Fourth in the regular season - it may all come falling down. Semi-final - Doomed. Less is more. War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength...

Not looking good for Lui, Watson said he will give him right up until the captains run. I knew he'd get injured at Leigh why on earth did they risk him!

I'm not sure we can criticise Evalds in the middle of the pitch: he's shown he can tackle when faced with a player coming at him (yes there have been mistakes e.g Wakefield last season) but few. Out wide, one bad position decision and he becomes a turnstile: nature of the game.
We need someone fast as the young Wigan team can be superb one minute and asleep the next: we need to capitalise on the sleep minutes.
