Wait and see I guess, but I'm struggling to think of a time the 'maverick talent with off the field issues' gamble has paid off for us. There could be more to come (and go) of course, but this doesn't seem to be what the squad needs player or personality-wise.
Of course when he's banging over a last minute 50-yard drop goal to win the grand final I'll eat my words.

I think the difference between the Club of the past and now is that Watson wont tolerate it I don't think. I know what you mean though, hopefully he'll see it as a chance to let his Rugby do the talking. I don't see any harm in giving him the chance, if he doesn't take it then we've lost very little. He can be shipped-out and an overseas spot and a load of cash off the cap becomes available again. When you think about what happened with Rangi, for all the messiness at the end, we were treated to some of the best Rugby I've ever seen. These characters can be double-edged swords, so let's hope he stays on the right edge for us.

Hah, I think we'd probably all take 8th place and entertaining rugby right now.

Think this COULD be a master stroke signing IF we can keep him on the straight and narrow. On his day Carney has been one of the best half backs in the world (you don't win the Dally M by being anything but). Interesting to see Ian Blease's comment on Twitter, most telling part being "he knows what we expect."
Also worth noting that he has played with Justin Carney and Lama Tasi previously at the Roosters in 2011 so hopefully he will have a good understanding of their abilities and already forged playing relationships with them.

I understand what you're getting at but whats to say the club has announced all the signings they are going to make. I don't think any of us saw this transfer coming. It was mentioned a while back but the general feeling on here seemed to be 'no chance he'll come to Salford' As far as I'm aware, Todd Carney fills the last quota/non-fed spot. So, if there are to be more signings, they'll have to be UK players. This is the part that seems a bit strange to me. They've said there's space available under the cap for strengthening later in the season, but they've just cut themselves off from the biggest supply of potential players. That's why I wouldn't be too surprised to see Robert Lui move on.

One positive in this signing that no-one has spotted yet is that with two Walnes and now two Carneys in the squad, it massively increases the chances of Jack Dearden getting a surname right during one of his commentaries.

It's also worth pointing out that Carney and Dobson were half back partners for Canberra back in 2007 and 2008 so hopefully they can build on that already existing partnership

Having slept on it, I'm warming more to the idea. If the visa goes through I think I would rather use the non fed spot for a creative player like Carney. At this stage of the season your not going to find any worldy 2ND rows so may as well look in UK. Carney can be class and the fact I saw Lui already strapped up last week means it makes more sense.
Love the fact everyone else thinks it's crazy, but guarantee if this guy signed for Saints or Leeds it would be classed as a coup and masterstroke

Does anyone know if he's available to play against Halifax today? I'm guessing he isn't.

Hopefully this will prove to be the exception to the rule, but how many times before has that been said. Quality player when his head is the game. Piss artist when it isn't. Fingers crossed we see the former.

Barring any injuries I hope Carney starts from the bench against Wigan, can see him coming on being a huge boost for the team and he's bound to get a massive reception from what's likely to be a bumper crowd.
Fingers crossed his visa gets approved as he's bound to generate extra press and interest ahead of the first game of the season.
