Surely if the council wanted to offload the stadium they would have done it when sale wanted to purchase it

I am at a social event or two where I expect (and certainly on one occasion, his future wife expects) those "inaction" officials will be attending.
Minds a JD, yours an explanation.
Aside from the usual social media bellendery (especially a couple of triggered Yorkists) I see this as annoyed club bods poker diplomacy into getting the council to be more "dynamic."
I expect a prompt supportive statement from the RFL urging completion.
Joined by an equally robust reply from SCC explaining and reassuring.
Resolution stepped on quicker and a plan to manage any snags.
Make that a double. 😃

the BBC say they've contacted the Council for comment and the Council have responded saying they will provide an update next week. It's a tricky one, the Council is bound by the democratic process, I'm not sure its Officers inaction that have got us this far, the the Elected Members being unable to reach a decision on what's best for the City and best use of public funds. If the statement forces a decision then great. As others have said, it's probably high stakes poker. It's probably the only the Club have been able to articulate the urgency of the situation to the Elected Members / Councillors.

Among the frustration with this situation, it should be remembered that the Council have shown great support for Salford, and for keeping the stadium available to us. The issue for the council is that the rules surrounding such a purchase are more legally complicated than for a private buyer. For example, even ignoring the usual Tory hollering, if another potential purchaser lodges an objection the council are legally compelled to deal with that situation prior to completion, otherwise a legal challenge can be launched. I know for a fact there are people involved in this situation who are desperate to get it over the line. Keep the faith!

I would suggest this may well have been going right to plan until the Tory opposition got involved. Also they're(the Tory)protestations about spending money on needy Salford residents is frankly laughable when the Council's short of money due to central govt funding reductions. No doubt any purchase of the stadium will come from a fund which can "only be used for non standard services ".Yes money can have a stipulated use as per govt. rules.

Positive! As development of the surrounding ground is on hold at the moment, so all the shysters know they can’t just buy the ground for building, this is a situation where it’s in everyone’s interest to get it done asap. This is definitely a poker hand statement from the club. If anyone tries to hold it up again, they can be blamed for the problems the club is facing. It’ll be a push to get it over the line in time, but it can be done for sure. Anyone who hasn’t written to your MP urging completion, please do so now!!!

The club will no doubt reaffirm the positions the councils dithering puts us in. No where to play, no central funding off RL Commercial. This is a **** storm and undermines the club, it needs sorting.

Well it's certainly generating plenty of publicity! Question is what do the sponsors think of this, and will it encourage more spectators to turn up ( use it or lose it). Interesting to see what city council views are ( both official and unofficial), wonder if we will have there response tonight or just banal statement.
