The 'earliest' circa mid-60s Salford 13 that I can remember seeing (before the 4 tackle rule came in and only 2 subs that had to used in the first half only)
1 David Jones - From Wales. He went home when the 4 tackle rule came in 2 Paul Murphy - Preston Grasshoppers - Brian Snape's son-in-law 3 Les Bettinson - No introduction required 4 Geoff Sims - Oldham - missed a kick in front of goal at Dewsbury late on in cup quarters to tie the match at 10-10. Never forgiven - we'd beaten Saints and Wigan both away in the previous rounds 5 Vince Nestor - Oldham 6 Trevor Rabbit - Came from the amatuer ranks aand stayed with the club along time with the A team 7 Jackie Brennan - Wigan - classy player who also had a pub near Wigan railway station 8 Frank Collier - Wigan international, over the hill, but a character to watch (sound familiar?) 9 Bob Burdell - From Blackpool B. - joined Wigan later - 1 cap for GB? Good hooker. 10 Terry Ogden - Oldham 11 Stuart Whitehead - Oldham 12 Aiden Breen - Huddersfield 13 Arthur Hughes - Went to Warrington
14 Ernie Critchley - unknown history 15 Mick Hennigan - Folly Lane
Any amendments/suggestions most welcome. Just think, I've carried all this Salford info. in my hard drive for all these years and many pints of Leffe have not wiped it clean!

Wasn't the full back David Evans ? If so,we've been trying to work out for a while whether he was the father of Ieuan Evans who subsequently went to Salford University . Met Frank Collier when he was a steward in the OT cricket pavilion. Sadly he subsequently committed suicide as his wife had done. FC beat up Geoff Simms, allegedly, for missing the easy kick at Dewsbury in the challenge cup quarter final

Really good memory, however being a pedant,I hope you bear with me. i think the full back was David Evans, who came after Arthur Gregory. We had a bald winger called Graham Jones. Joe Southward was also around in the early 60s,on the wing. The other name I recall, was Martin D1ckens at hooker, but probably he arrived 1967-68.

Ernie Critchley came from Halifax.Arthur Hughes won the challenge cup with Widnes in 1964.and tragically the great Frank Collier took is own life.

Thats bad news about Frank Collier, I didn't know that. Do you remember the team gave him the ball to kick a conversion in front of the posts in his last home game before retirement? He missed it, of course. I was stood behind the posts at Dewsbury when Simms missed the kick and m'mate burst into tears! I got the score wrong in my post it was 7-9

Joe Southward and Martin Dickens, of course ! They had both slipped off my hardrive. Oldham and Blackpool recruits, and I think Dickens played in the 68 final?

David Evans was as tough a full-back as I've ever seen but too reckless for his own good.

I was at that game at Dewsbury as well. I remember that it was a bitterly cold day and the ground was frozen. Poor Sims couldn't dig a hole with his heel to stand the ball up and he had to have another player lying on the ground to hold the ball up. Oh for a kicking tee or even a pile of sand!
