In the words of the great Paula Abdul.
"I take--2 steps forward I take--2 steps back"
The requiem for Salford.

Comment from the club
"The Club were surprised and disappointed by Watson’s decision yesterday, following his previous statements of intent for the coming season"
So news came out the blue for blease and King. Really annoyed how watto has left the club.

wow was not expecting that and neither were the club going off the statement, as many have said got to be more to it as Hudds is not a big club, yes have a bigger cap but not a better team. I wonder if ST sales have been really down or we have gone back on a signing etc that was promised ? time will tell but honestly gutted tonight. Thank you Ian for what you have done, a fantastic coach and gave us some great moments... on your legacy i shall reserve judgment until we know more. need a drink or 3 now

Really surprised by this decision from Watto - sometimes I guess money talks. Given the squad he has built and progression over recent seasons it can only be a purely financial decision. The job he is taking on at Huddersfield is a massive one and not a logical next step over a top four club. Still have to thank him for his efforts during his time at Salford.

I'm sure the truth will come out eventually; there must have been something going on behind the scenes for a coach of Watto's calibre to take a sideways\backwards step to join Huddersfield.
I was under the impression that we were going full cap next season. If that's the case, you'd have thought Watto would have jumped at the chance to see what he could do with some additional capital to invest in the playing squad.
I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for Paul King, Ian Blease and everyone else with top-level oversight of business operations.

The cynic in me says that he was tapped up months ago, when Woolford was sacked. He spoke to Hull to see if their offer was better but turned it down because they couldn't match what Huddersfield were offering. He played along that he was committed to the club just in case the Huddersfield move fell through, and then jumped ship as soon as everything was agreed and finalised. To my mind, the decision looks to have been made too quickly to be off the back of a call in the last couple of days.
I know he has done wonders for the club, but I've lost a lot of respect for him now and I can't wish him well for the future.

Creating false hope among the fans is absolutely scandalous in my eyes. He has gone about the whole thing very poorly. The openly flirting with other clubs whilst still being our coach and basically saying ‘I’m here until something until something better comes up’ never sat right with me. A lot of people viewed this as good open honesty but to me it would of been better unsaid.
I really can’t understand why whilst we’re on the cusp of something special he would take a sideways, possibly downwards, move. The only explanation is that he’s getting paid a large sack of gold.

I am disappointed in as much as a couple of days ago he was staying. But money talks are Huddersfield a better proposition than us who knows how strong is the club they have a benifactor at the moment,of the two offers he as recieved I would have thought Hull was the better bet.I wish him well, we will see just how good he is.

It just seems a sideways move. Makes me think either a signing, or an investor hasn't come off.

I’m not going to try and second guess what has gone on behind the scenes. I’m not sure where this thing has come from about us spending cap next year (I’ve seen a few people saying it). All I’ve read/heard is that King would like us to be able to but we need a backer and more fans to do so. Maybe I’ve missed something
I can see why Huddersfield would be tempting. Full cap plus marquee signing potential with a wealthy, relatively hands off owner who I suspect will have told Watto he will have free rein to build a team that can regularly challenge for top spot. Already several international quality players. Done good young players. They have been a nearly club for a while and their academy is starting to produce. Plus it’s close enough to easily commute. So in many ways it is a good fit for Watto rather than going to an already successful team
But they have been through a lot of managers in the last 10 years, Davy is getting on a bit and I’m not sure where they would be without him. Their fan base is small and whilst it has grown a bit I’m not sure it has shown it is ever going to be more than 5k on a regular basis. Some of their older players seen past their best - cudjoe and McGilvaray. Maybe Watto can reinvigorate them or maybe he will ship them on.
The crucial season will be next year. Watto plays a very simple game plan - defend well and clear your lines in your own half before kicking for position. Once you get a few sets in their half then start moving it. Once you have a lead and a tiring defence start to attack from deep. When that doesn’t work (against a fast defensive line) or the players make mistakes it looks like one rugby and the team struggle. He has shown he can identify and exploit teams weaknesses as well though. We were not great on Watto’s first year despite having Lui and Dobbo so next year will be the year all teams should be targeting hudds.
Will be interesting to see if Davy would stick by Watto if he struggles next year like Salford did in the early days. And that’s the frustrating thing. It feels like he could have built a real dynasty at Salford. If he’d gone on to do that at one of the ‘big’ clubs, who could have begrudged him but to do it somewhere like Huddersfield rather than with us would stick in the throat more than a little. The timing is poor too with the season ticket campaign just launching and at the key recruiting time for finalising deals
Still mourning I think. Really don’t get why h hasn’t given us another year. Massively grateful for what he’s achieved with us, disappointed with how it’s ended. Wish him no I’ll. but want us to smash Huddersfield every time we play them. Hoping we can move forward with a new coach. I trust Blease and King to make good appointments more than i did with Wilko and Marwan. But this is a massive challenge for us

Watson knows the reason/reasons he left. The board know only what Watson has told them. Will we ever know? I doubt it.

I suspect there will be some differences between Watto and the club’s versions when they come out. Plus lots of speculation and inside info that gets out We’ll have to try and unpick how accurate it all is and what/who to believe. Or just accept it and move on I hope that the club and Watto will be professional about it. They have a good track record with Evalds and Jacko who we were disappointed to see go so hopefully it will be the same with the coach 🤞

The moment anybody, player or Coach start to talk to other Clubs its time to go, heart not in it, I don’t wish him luck because that would only be to the detriment of my Club Salford, all I can say is thanks.
