What other options do we have? So so poor

Jones and Olpherts??? Evalds did ok on the wing when he had to tonight but not a long term solution.
On an unrelated note what was the problem with the traffic tonight. We kept thinking ‘they’ll delay kick off’ because there were so many people still not inside. We parked at chill factor and walked and got to the ground at 7:40

Welham and Johnson got targeted every time Wigan attacked, and 80% of the time it resulted in a try. That right wing was a huge problem last season and it appears that nothing has been done to resolve it. Welham is a huge liability; constantly jumping out of the line and being caught with his pants down by better and faster opposition.

Hopefully watto has seen that duo hasn’t worked out again and changes it for the next game

If this duo happens again ill be putting a lot of money on the left sided winger to score a hat trick. Dreadful combo

Don't let us single two out when we can in all honesty single the lot out.We were woefull against an average Wigan side.

Right side defence woeful I'm afraid. Not trying to blame two players for an overall abysmal performance but it needs saying.

Well think it’s safe to say our fears about our backline are justified. Welham is nowhere near good enough, very poor in defence and attack. He couldn’t even take a catch in the bloody warm up! Johnson and Bibby also extremely poor in defence, thank god for Junior or there would’ve been even more points on the board.
As bad as our edges were, i thought Wigan’s backs were very good. Escare is class and some of the speed and passing was a pleasure to watch to be honest.
One positive was our forwards, I thought we more than matched them in the middle but the gulf in class on the edges was frightening.
Another positive was Josh Wood - thought he was our best player by a mile, we lost some impetus when he was off the field. Excited to see him progress this season.
Not quite panic stations yet but we need to look at other options as teams are going to rip us apart out wide all seasonif we continue with that backline.

You are right Dixon it probably wasn’t fair to target just those 2, they weren’t the only ones and by no means do I think they didn’t/don’t put effort in. My issue is we could see this last season, that side just isn’t strong enough, nothing has been done to fix it. Unless of course olpherts comes in next week and looks a World beater It certainly needs looking at before next week as wakeys wingers are up there with the most dangerous in super league

Couldn’t make it last night, sounds like we’ve picked up where we left last season or is that unfair?

Not an unexpected result as far as I'm concerned.
I think it is a little unfair to cast severe judgement after one game, last season is a good indicator at how teams can change things going forward. I think we would have struggled with our best 17 out last night and what we did put out was far from our best. I'm sure that IW would love to strengthen the weak areas in the team but his hands are pretty much tied due to the fact that the club has no money. As much as I like Manu he needs to probably retire at this stage now. Best for him and the club which could do with the money saved on an expensive import and possibly free-up a little cash for a replacement.
I wouldn't want to be in IW's shoes tbh. He literally has to try and provide another season of miraculous endeavor out of a side that overachieved last season and then sold or lost its best assets. I think it's fair to say that it's going to be a very long season and it will be interesting to see if those fickle fans that occasionally appear stick around.
Are we flogging a dead horse? Not yet...
But the horse is old and its legs are starting to buckle.

We lost this exact same fixture last year (and 2 of the first 3) so its not a big issue. That being said, I thought replacing Welham (as well as Dobson) would be priority number one in the off season. Either Watson doesn’t see a problem or we couldn’t convince anyone to join - not sure which is more worrying.
On another point, why so tentative about playing the new boys? I’m no manager but I’d favour throwing at least a couple in and have them adapt the hard/quick way. I’d rather have one of the young forwards on the bench than Griffin.

Last night wasn't just about how poor Welham and Johnson are. We have a distinct lack of pace in the backline and it reminds me of a few years ago when Noble was in charge. Last night it was a case of 3 or 4 Wigan attackers on Welham & Johnson. It doesn't mater how good you are, two against 3 or 4 are never going to win especially when the opposition have so much pace. As an observer last night I knew exactly when Wigan were going to switch the ball to the left edges. Why couldn't the team? Last night we dropped the ball about 6 times in attack and 3 or 4 times coming away from our own line. It's those unforced errors that lost us the game. You can't invite a team like Wigan to attack you without making the hard yards first. Dobbo's loss was so evident last night too. We didn't make the correct plays at the right time or control the pace of the game. If we don't address lack of pace, errors and game management we're in the bottom four.

Nothing to lose next week, for me we’ve got to mix the back line up. Give olpherts his chance and with Manu out for the season look at a loan signing.
Bet a pound to a pinch of poop we start with Welham and Johnson though.
Was interesting to see Johnson subbed, I’ve always been a fan but he was at fault for a couple of their tries though, especially when they kicked near the line. Was he injured or was it something else?
