With 2017 drawing to a painful and at times embarrassing conclusion we can only look forwards to next season. This season has to be considered to be a success, despite the last few months leaving us all with a very sour taste. With Dobbo and Walne leaving, as well as Carney and Krasniqi probably going too we have to look at who will be coming in now. 1st order for me to give captains armband to Kopczak, with Flanagan as VC. If rumours are true then Patton will be in at 7. We definitely need another prop, a centre and a winger. Have not seen enough of Olphaerts to say if he will be a starter but have read that we have offered a contract to Ben Crooks. Would imagine with the players we have leaving then a good lump of the salary cap would be freed up. Would hold some back however to supplement the squad before the split next season.

First half about 9/10 Second half 0/10
So overhall id say 4.5, players coaches should be ashamed of recent performances. Joke of a club!

Much as I hate it last night proves what I was saying earlier in the season was correct, to sign up overachieving players en masse was unwise as we are now stuck with some players who are not good enough except on their very best day.
Griffin, JJ, Johnson, Welham, Lannon are not good enough to be starters in a SL with ambitions of progressing from 4th. We have a quality prop who seems to be made of digestives and BMM has put on an alarming amount of weight since he has gone from man of steal contender to being lucky to be in the starting 13.
I'll put it this way we seem to have no plan A never mind plan B, I think Watson needs help, I'll go so far as to say if Sheens was still at the club we wouldn't be on the shocking run we are as he would have changed things round were Watson seems to have just maintained the same old same old approach.

So new coach, new Sheens? What''s the way forward? The bare minimum is a new Sheens figure to help Watson, I've said it on another thread I think he'll be gone at the end of the season anyway, I'd hope we go for Toovey if he doesn't get a gig in Australia beforehand.

Blimey!
As disappointing as the end of the season is, we've set into motion the direction we need to go. As fans we need to be not so fickle at these times. When we were first sitting pretty in fourth, top eight secured and a challenge cup semi around the corner, everyone was full of praise of the same players and the same coach. Watson was the best thing to happen to Salford in a long time, and we were all praising his ability to get the most out of the players he had. We were rightly impressed with the players themselves. How certain players had turned themselves around and stood out. Nothing has changed.
All that has happened is the ebb and flow of every clubs fortunes. The results of circumstance, luck, morale, squad, injury, and decisions. It happens to every club. It seems so obvious in Salford's case because the form dip has happened at a crucial time, rather than earlier in the season. With the exception of Cas and a to a lesser extent, us. Every other club had a very mixed first half of the season. SL is a marathon and we simply have not paced ourselves correctly. The big problem we have is that Salford fans only tend to turn up when things are going well, when they inevitably are not they disappear in droves. With such a small fan base this could be quite disastrous when it comes to the consequences. Look at Leeds fans when they were propping-up the SL the season before. They didn't disappear after what would have been called a disastrous season for Salford let alone Leeds. As frustrating as it is, the club needs support especially when things are not going to plan.
I've enjoyed this season regardless. The end is turning into a real drag but the highs have outweighed the lows this season, and I don't think I could ever say I've said that before about Salford in my lifetime. The simple facts for us are plain to see...
We need a larger squad. Our coach needs to put into place the lessons he's learned from this season. Key positions need replacing well. We need to get behind the club.
Changing the coach, after him signing an extension is ridiculous. Constant coach swapping has never given any team success. Writing-off players now who were praised for their improvement earlier in the season says a lot more about us fans than the players themselves. We just need to dust ourselves off, learn from this season, and move forward. The answer is to build on your foundations not keep knocking the foundations down and rebuilding them.

Honestly mate you weren't there, if there is not an issue or 'reason' for this run I'll eat my hat. Words can't tell you how badly they capitulated last night.

I really think we need a senior Director of Football, Kear or Sheens like, to look for players, put forward new ideas, take the pressure off the coach and give him some breathing space. When Wakefield were in the same position they pulled a master stroke and brought in the brilliant John Kear, the change was amazing, he knows the game inside out.
Is Toovey that man or who else is around?

Is Toovey that man or who else is around? The man I'd look at would be Smith from Warrington, well respected, connections in the NRL and seen it all as a coach. Toovey I think is a little young and volatile yet.

And what about the Assistant Coaches? I thought they looked after attack and Watto the defence.

I've trimmed your post, but I think you're largely right. If we look back at this season, we think "What a disgraceful finish!". If, however, we cast our minds back to last October, and think "What did we want from 2017?", we'd have to say "Job well done!" Now, the over-reaction of some calling for wholesale changes is just that - an over-reaction. We do need some changes, but we don't need to get rid of the coach and half the team. We need clear heads. I hope Watto has learned lessons from this year and formulated plans for next year. Onwards and upwards in 2018. Enjoy the off-season.

Tony Smith would be ideal for the Director of Rugby role, if not Neil Henry, recently released by Gold Coast would certainly fit the bill. Our issue seems to be that our starters don't seem to start often enough, leaving us to rely on our squad players to play more often than they were intended to when signed. The focus on this must be strength and conditioning as well as tactics that don't put undue strain upon possible injury prone players.
