Would we be better with a marquee player or spending the money on a marquee academy.

I'd be happy with a bog standard academy and a marquee signing to be honest.

Would we be better with a marquee player or spending the money on a marquee academy. I would hazard a guess that the ongoing costs involved in establishing and sustaining a top-class Academy would be too much.

I have always maintained a proviso of the marquee signing rule should be that the exact same amount as the signing costs should be invested in the youth system of the club involved.

Probably wouldn't be much higher than the annual salary of a top marquee player to be honest.

We need an A Team and a proper structure for them to play in. Think it should be compulsory for every SL team. As Watson said 'there's too big a difference between the Academy and the 1st team'.
Maybe a Leigh Salford Swinton! Oldham Rochdale Academy.

Who would a Marquee player be (that we could afford)?
When Warrington go down, would Ratchford be a marquee player for us?

Who would a Marquee player be (that we could afford)? The best thing we should do is identify a player already at the club, or British player who is the future, for at least the next few seasons. A player to build a team around. Make them the marquee signing. Sign them up on a long term deal and pay them what you will. It frees-up valuable cap space to bring in another player or two which can be crucial over the course of a season. The chances of attracting a real marquee signing from Australia is almost non-existent. Their cap allowance, culture, climate, after playing opportunity and strong dollar mean that the very best Aussies stay there. So I think teams shouldn't bother with marquee's from Australia unless they are genuinely trying to squeeze in another body into a well-rounded squad. The marquee rule was really implemented to prevent our talent from leaving rather than attracting overseas talent. The only real talent worthy of the title in Australia, with a slim chance of them actually coming would be Sam Burgess. Even then, he's made plenty of noises to suggest he'll never come back. I'd have said Graham as well a few seasons ago, maybe not so much now. All the other big names would never come unless they were facing some kind of crisis in Australia. A British club would have to pay serious money to attract one of the top names. Cameron Smith and Thurston are on a million dollars each. Robbie Farrah just under that. To give an idea. We should be looking at the next big thing in SL, and throwing marquee money at them. No quota spot taken up allowing the signing of decent second grade Aussies hungry to make a name, of which there's plenty.

I'd go for Johnson from Wakefield as he's a sure fire future regular international, quick as he'll too.

Agree Carnster, but the difficulty with that is keeping harmony within the club. Also can't really think of any names who would fulfill that criteria. A can of worms.

I'd be happy with a bog standard academy and a marquee signing to be honest. How does the rule work does a player have to be paid a certain wage to be classed marquee.

Its just that their wage doesn't count towards the salary cap, so you would expect that they're paid higher than the rest of the team.

Well a marquee player counts as £175,000 on the cap (£100,000 if club trained). So, you’ll be paying that as a minimum. You could pay them £3 million but they would still be £175,000 on the cap.

I'd be happy with a bog standard academy and a marquee signing to be honest. I don't think Salford want or intend to have an academy or A team, just happy for other clubs to do the work and just sign players as they come out of contract. Our latest signings show we are just signing first team squad players. Not worth spending money on Academy or A teams I have heard that 5 lads from Langworthy's under 13s have been signed, between them, by Saints, Wigan and Leeds with Salford not interested in them
