This has been talked about in separate threads but it's worth discussing properly.
Who would be your 1st choice at full back, and what would you do with the other player to keep them both happy?

Yesterday Evalds full back, he's never a winger or centre Bibby wing O'Brien sub hooker Sub Hooker ahead of Tomkins or Brining? Playing Devils Advocate, how would you then keep either of them happy? Edit: sorry, seen you were referring to just yesterday's game.

Both decent enough under a high ball. Evalds has more pace and is a better player at backing up a line break. O'Brien is better at linking in the attacking line but Evalds looks like he's improved this aspect of his game recently when he's played fullback.
O'Brien has a superior kicking game but he's out of form and his defense is very poor on one to one tackles. Personally I'd go with Evalds who is more of an individual attacking threat and very good at getting on the end of grubber kicks. Evalds is wasted as a winger in my opinion because Junior is a battering ram type centre and not very creative at making space. Having an extremely powerful winger like Vatuvei will suit us much better with more physical strength to bust tackles in one on one situations?
That's my humble opinion but I'd like to read other views.

Evalds for me at fullback any time, should never have lost his place in the first place.
Gaz. For me is a 6, so what to do with him??? With Robbie playing well he is not going to get in there, plus at the moment we have Carney ready to step in at either 6 or 7. Gaz could go on the bench. But who would you take of the bench , we need a spare hooker on the bench, so that would be a choice of 3, HOOD .TOMKINS. BRINNING. plus 3 forwards/ pack . So the bigger question is what would you do with Gaz.

Maybe Gaz will eventually be Dobbos successor, which may have been talked about in Niall's contract discussions leading to him agree to sign. Just a thought...

I think using both is the key to go forward with. Manny put Evalds has improved his link up play but sorry I disagree with that. When Evalds plays Full Back we do not have the same go forward that we get with O'Brien and that link up rugby. Evalds almost every time is caught with ball in hand. However i also think the link with O'Brien has become predictable now so having the ability to throw in different game plans works could work in our favour. Attacking wise i would have Gaz as No.1, in defence i would say Niall edges it so both have pro's and cons.
If i was Niall though and playing out on the wing, i would be seriously p***ed having to play outside S'au. I guess that's another thread though to discuss.

Depends on who we play, their defensive structures, and who lines-up against us.
It's basically apples and oranges.
If a side is fielding less experienced players or slower players on the outside of their defenses, or have an identified weaker defender, or play sliding defense then GoB is the natural choice as he creates an extra man and forces defensive players to make choices. If we play against a solid defensive side, or need to make plays that punch through defenses rather than play around them, then Evalds is the man.
I don't see it as a competition between them, rather two sides of the same coin.

Evalds is the best fullback at the club. And Watson knows it.Obrien has a bit of fan club and will go into folklore and rightly so.But things move on,that's the way the mop flops.

Evalds as full back all day, with Gaz as his replacement if he loses form. Once "The Beast" arrives I would imagine Evalds will be back in at full back. Can't wait for him to arrive and give us some more size and pace on the wing.

Evalds for me. O'Brien on the bench to cover a variety of positions.

Evalds all day. He is more off the cuff and at least takes the line on.

Evalds has been the best full back at the club for the last 5 season. Sadly for 4 of these seasons he has rarely featured in that position. He won player of the year the one season he actually played regularly at full back. O Brien does a good job there when called upon and if you want an extra half back he is useful but Evalds is the better out and out fullback mainly because it's his natural position.
