Justin Carney left the club nearly two months ago now and yet we still haven't signed a replacement, is now the time to bring in some real quality in the outside backs? After losing our last three league games it surely has to be! I personally think if we are to have any chance of getting to Wembley and make the top 4 in Super League we need to sign someone sooner rather than later, surely there's a decent fringe player in the NRL who can play Centre/Winger who we can bring in until the end of the season? I'd even potentially try and sign the best winger in the Championship until the end of the season to create more competition in the outside backs, if Bibby get's injured, who do we bring in?
We're massively lacking pace on our left edge, Jake Bibby is coming in as a solid back up player and doing a decent job every time he comes in but what we need is some real quality to take us to the next level. Surely Ian Watson, Ian Blease and Marwan realise this and are keeping a close eye on what's going on down under.
Finances shouldn't be an issue either, we've got to the semi-final of the Challenge Cup which should bring in an extra £100,000s worth of revenue as it's a split gate, add to that we're going to be playing in the Super 8s hosting the likes of Wigan, Saints and Leeds as appose to London and Featherstone. Sign and top outside back now before it's too late and we get turned over against by Huddersfield and Leeds, we don't want this season to be remembered for what could have been, we're on track for our best season in two decades if not three, replace Justin Carney NOW! before it's too late!!!

Also, does anyone know if we were to sign a player from the NRL would he be allowed to play in the Challenge Cup semi-final? Is Hassson available for selection against Wigan at the end of July? If not fingers crossed we'll have Mossop back by then!

Fellow Reds,
I understand and empathise with all of our disappointment at the games we have lost when we should have come away with a win, we all hate losing, me included and yet our current position is in stark contrast to the pessimistic views of many on this forum at the start of the season who thought we were doomed for an unstatisfactory season. And that begs the question why are we doing far better than we thought at he beginning of this campaign, and here are my thoughts:
Teams take time to develop and so do the individuals in them. For the first time in recent history we have the same nucleus of a team continuing into this, their second season together. The fact that this team and it's individuals has/have developed beyond our expectations gives us hope. Next season the individuals in the team will further develop, even the ones that we don't rate today. Ian Watson knows what he is doing and I am confident that he also knows who are capable of stepping up to a higher level, those that are not, who he will move on. I think that we will be pleasantly surprised how much the likes of Lannon, Wayne, Murray, Johnson, Tomkins, Bibby, Wood, Brinning et al will be better next season- experience is invaluable.
Do we need another 3 or 4 star players? I would say no we don't. We need to be patient with the players that have broken through this season. What we need is to stay within salary cap, keep our heads down in the faith that we are going in the right direction and that stability within the club sends out an unnerving message to the opposition.

We are not standing still, we are on the rise with what we have got and Fergie was never restrained by a salary cap as we are.

I do think going into the business end of the season though we need a new addition in our outside backs. We've lost Justin Carney and still not found a replacent after two months which is far too long. Say we were to lose Junior or Johnson now for the rest of the season we'd be knackered. In Watson we trust of course but we need to strengthen the outside backs if we're to have any chace of making the Grand Final or Wembley which has to be the aim after some of the performances this season and our league position.

replace Justin Carney NOW! before it's too late!!! I'm not convinced that there needs to be a knee-jerk reaction to losing Carney. The team could do with being strengthened, but it has to be the right player(s) that comes in. I think we have to put our trust in Watto with this one. I'm sure the club are working on recruitment behind the scenes and want to find players who will buy-in to the team's ethos.

If we don't strengthen the team we are standing still.Every new season teams start a new, the season just gone becomes a distant memory. The team has punched above its weight this season.Widnes did well last season they have slipped back this season the same could happen to us.

For once here I agree with Dixon13, we definitely need at least a couple of players for next year to compliment what we have.
I'm more around the 3/4 line some much needed pace.
Hasson doesn't look the answer and I'm not sure how bad Mossop is but if he recovers soon we're not bad for props; CK Griffin Tasi Mossop Walne Murray (has gone really well in the games he's played)
It also makes me chuckle at the shite some people come out with on social media and their expectations, for example Welham came to us with a very good try / game ratio but had been playing in the lower division. He was a last minute stop gap replacement having lost both Griffin and Vidot. He came in and performed superbly up until a couple of games back, everyone was singing his praises for the partnership he'd struck up with Johnson and the amount of service Johnson was receiving. Now if you look on Twitter he's the greediest player ever to grace the Salford shirt......the mind absolutely boggles.
Yes I am Kris Welham and I claim my £5!

The social media reaction to any Salford defeat is a sight to behold. People saying "disgraceful", "you should all be ashamed" and "hang your heads in shame" after a last second one point defeat against a team we haven't beaten away since before I was born is frankly ridiculous. Welham has been great this season and has played a big part getting is where we are. He is though probably one of the players we could improve on if we want to make that next step, although as mentioned who's to say Watson can't improve him in the off season?
Where we are now is probably above even watsons expectations for this season, we have jumped a couple of steps in one season. But if we want to win anything which we have a fantastic chance of I think we probably need one or two particularly in the outside backs, we are running a big risk there after losing carney. As has said though has to be the right player, no point rocking the boat.

I'd agree with the statement of this being a knee jerk reaction if I was saying this after the Toronto game, however 2 months have passed since we lost Justin Carney and we've still not found a suitable replacement, there has to someone out there who we can bring in on an 18 month contract or at least until the end of the season. If Johnson get's injured we simply are not good enough on the wings against the top sides in the competition, this was evident against Wakefield and Hull FC in the league. We lack real go forward in the earlier plays of our sets and struggle to get on the front foot. There's nothing more I'd love to see than us make the top 4, but I feel if we don't bring in quality outside back until the end of the season we're seriously going to struggle, especially when you consider the 4 remaining games we have this year (all tough) and then the 7 high intensity games in the Super 8s.

I completely agree gadger, we evidently have space on the cap and an overseas spot available so surely there's someone in the NRL who we can bring in as a quick fix until the end of the season or potentially sign someone on an 18-month deal and still fits the team culture. We might as well throw everything at it now considering the position we're in, if we were to finish 4th and play Castleford in the semi-final we would stand a real chance unless we added 2 quality players. Somehow Warrington and Saints have made awesome signings during the campaign, why can't we after we've lost Justin Carney and made the semi-final of the Challenge Cup and the playoffs? I honestly fear those last 7 games will be too high an intensity for our current squad, we need to strengthen now before it's too late!
