I suspect adding Manchester to the name now makes it easier to drop the Salford name in a few years time I'm guessing you're a glass half empty type of guy?

Why not go all way and call us Salford Manchester and Lancashire Red Devils even wider appeal. As soon has he puts Manchester in the name he will then loose more than he gains. But why? Are we not two cities united? Closer now than at any point in recent history. Most Salford fans happily travel to watch Man Utd and Salford without any internal hiccups, so how on earth could tagging Manchester on the end cause people to turn their backs on their club? I'll be interested to hear your reasoning on this, because I can't fathom it to be honest. I think you have already said you really don't have an allegiance to the city of Salford.I do I was born in it.I started supporting the club in 1954 Salford that is a lot of people had done the same before and people before them.A lot of great players have played for the club Salford that is.You will probably go and watch an hybrid club a lot will not we are Salford not Manchester. One last point would they still go to watch Salford Manchester United.

That's not reasoning. That's just you saying I'm not Salfordian. As a non-Salfordian I've watched them for over 35 years and played for them for three. But I'm not a 'real' Salford fan am I? I'm not sure nit-picking my origins or anyone else's counts as a reasonable reason. Fair enough if you personally wouldn't like it, just say that.

I for one am really enjoying the best time supporting Salford RLFC, in my twenty odd years supporting the club.

I'm mystified by 3 things
1. Could anybody tell me what quantifiable evidence there is for a name change 2. The name changes for clubs to link them to bigger/different cities don't seem to work ManchesterSale etc 3. Why London Broncos linked to a city of 8.3M got the smallest average gate or thereabouts in Superleague
This debate doesn't seem to have any factual basis and asking a few fans or the guru won't give any validated facts. All seems very left field to me.

I'm more mystified about how a thread that someone started praising our coach who is doing a great job has turned into another rehash of an issue that has several threads of its own

Trying to get back on topic!
I also thought that it was sheens who was the person behind the curtain, but particularly far this season it appears that Sheens was holding us back!
I have no doubt that Watson learned alot from him and he helped get rid of some players who caused problems, but whatever the reason IW has these players working as a team and playing a brand of rugby we love to see!

Watson is doing an unbelievable job and has harnessed a spirit which is unprecented at this club,in the last 20 years. Apart from learning from Tim Sheens,it was Sheens who stabilised the club, brought in 3 top aussies that had been under the radar (Vidot is now off the radar) and managed to put the Doc back in his box. Temporarily. So,Watson in the right place at the right time but really making the most of it. Recruited a good back room team and instilled a fantastic work ethic into the players. And he's local !

Let's not get too carried away because things can change very quickly in sport as we have witnessed this year. Are we possibly riding on the crest of the Tim Sheens wave? Yes let's acknowledge that Watson has done a very job so far but the real test is when fortunes change and you have the fans and the owner on your back and a team lacking in confidence. A good example of this is Karl Harrison who went from hero to zero in the space of a few months between 2006 and 2007. Another example in sport is Claudio Ranieri at Leicester City. Let's keep it real because the more Ian Watson gets bigged up the more pressure it adds with the potential for a bigger fall. I think we need to attribute our present form to everyone's contribution so far this year from all the backroom staff and all the players.
