If we ignore the M6 corridor, Rugby League in the west of Pennines has not had a history of popularity for several decades. A brief look at the history of Swinton and Oldham shows that they were attracting reasonable crowds but, once they went into decline, the crowds went into greater decline. Rochdale have long been unable to pack them in: they were complaining about small crowds in the 1920's!
We cannot compare to Wigan or Leeds as we are in a different market. How to research it is the crux. If the survey suggests a way then it'll be worth it.
MR: I was thinking something similar but not just the council. Perhaps us.
Add to the mix, Manchester Rangers applying to join League 1 as a Manchester team

Why can't I get past page one on the survey??? Grrrrrrrrrrrr The form is really fussy. It's best to put some text in to every part of the question which asks for your address, even if that text is just a full stop or a space.

I believe some fans have struggled when using a tablet device. If that's the case it might be worth using a PC or Laptop.

The club have said recently that we need 5k home fans at every game and they could deal with that.
Marwan managed to negotiate a market value deal with the AJ so our rent costs have done down considerably. We no longer have to average 8k to break even, we've also dropped the academy which cost us circa £200k per year.
Robbie Paul's been brought in to fill the boxes and corperate seats, Sale Sharks make around 3/4x as such off corperate seats than Salford do.
We won't change our name from Salford, this isn't going to happen, I never believed it would for a second. I think a small minority of fans are gullable and meltdown too quickly.
Get down to the AJ Bell on Friday for the Hull KR game everyone, a Challenge Cup Final would be a game changer for the club. Imagine how many more season tickets we would sell next year off the back of that?

Think you're on the right track salfordlad1. In his tweets, MK is calling himself a Salfordian and lauding the songs about SALFORD RED DEVILS.
Interestingly (or probably not), just read that The Rev William Web Ellis, the supposed founder of the game with the odd shaped balls at Rugby School, was born in 1806 in......Salford! Now is that a base for branding? Perhaps it's about time somebody started selling the City of Salford, home of the first lending library, home of the inventor James Joule and lots more I'm sure.
Pity Friday's match is on the dreaded Sky box which will decrease the crowd, but just hope the atmosphere created by the Salford fans is as good as at Wigan. Back to the days of the Shed. And let's hope Swinton beat the humble pie-eaters then Salford v Swinton in the quarters....well you have to dream.

In response to salfordlad1 above. If you brought somebody into a company to sell it to corporate clients and the clients didn't bite; then you asked the salesman/consultant why and he said you've got the wrong name. Would you look to him to re- brand your product? Just a thought.
Anyway interesting to see the theme of the new promo video is HERITAGE. A new form of marketing, mixed message.

You can't deny that the club have improved incredibly on this sort of thing...Salford heritage is creeping into a lot of things lately.

Great to see a little clip of the great Colin Dixon and I always thought the legendary Gus Risman was a full back, not a stand off.
So yes with Webb Ellis and Les Diable Rouge (for all the United fans) we might have a little heritage.
Keep working Carnster, we might have a brand and the outline of a marketing plan soon!

Excellent article about potential name change of the club by Martyn Sadler in this week's League Express.

I've just heard an advert on the radio for Bury College. They've got a market stall at Rochdale market one day next week in order try and encourage students to go there. Does Rochdale have a college? Yes. Has it put Bury off going to their back yard and poaching prospective students ? No. Bury obviously have the drive and determination to be the best in the region and rather than rely on being spoon fed local kids they've gone out of their catchment area to generate interest. 10 cities/towns in Greater Manchester 6 with no RL teams ( I think ) 8 with no Superleague team. I'm not comparing further education to a sports team but the theory's the same.

It's not a bad analogy at all mrg . I work in the education sector. Schools and Colleges are only able to balance their books, or attract investment if they get enough people through the door. You get given money for every pupil that walks through the door, in the same way a Sports Team makes money through ticket and merchandise sales. Places which aren't oversubscribed (i.e. Salford Red Devils) have to rely on attracting people from outside of their catchment area and often have to advertise outside of their geographical location and 'reach out' in order to do achieve this. In addition, a similar analogy applies - if you consistently get good results, your school/college/sports team will grow in popularity and eventually the students/fans will be more inclined to attend.

I've just had to complete this on behalf of my dad and uncle. Both nearly 70 but lifelong fans and neither knew about fans survey or how to fil it in. A hope the next stage of this consultation is more far reaching.
