Was talking about Sneyd and Croft. For those privileged to see Dai Watkins my view, probably now rosier than it should be, was that he could kick a ball twice as far as Sneyd, fantastic goal kicker and was faster and as tricky as Croft. Not as well organised as Croft but Croft does remind me of him. Thoughts? Hard to compare apples and eggs Dai was a terrific player and could kick very high and far though the 40/20 rule didn't apply and kicks seemed less stategic then than they appear now.
I won't have a bad word said against Dai of course but Croft doesn't remind me of him at all.
Like a lot of great players especially from Yawn he could be invisisble for 70 minutes and win a game in the last ten.
Croft's work rate and willingness to put himself at the forefront and in the midst of everything makes him quiet a different player.
Good question though, JJR.
From 1968 through to mid seventies we were watching some marvellous players with for me David Watkins being the king of them all. However the last few years have been as exciting due to Watto, Jacko and many others. I really do think that we should feast our eyes on our current group of management and players as the joy they are giving us is equal to anything I’ve ever watched at our great club.

My Son made this for my 60th, he contacted David because he knew he is my favourite player of all time, not only did the Great man sign it he returned it the next day by express delivery. it takes pride of place in my home and is the first thing I see when I get up and the last thing I see at night.

I admit I spent hours and hours copying his sidestep and had it pretty well down to a T.

The one thing I remember about Watkins is his touch kicking. He could put it 50+ yards downfield with spin whereas most of todays kickers are happy with 20 yards; not sure why.

Yes. That kick to touch of his was a sight to behold. It sort of hugged the touchline before going over it on the way down. But a completely different player to Croft so hard to compare.

We have been v fortunate that Watson/ Blease developed a spine of Lussick,/ Tomkins, Hastings, Lui, Evalds,
And now Rowley/ Blease have developed Ackers, Sneyd, Croft, Brierley/ Sarginson
Both spines play in their own style, but which is the better of the two?

I felt/feel worried by both, I knew Watto ball wouldn't let me down though I was bored a bit at times but I have to say Rowleyball frightens me every match but it would have to be Rowley's spine everyday of the week!
Though this may also be coloured by the quality of the outside backs.

I also thought this thread needed a revival as He done good and run strong and goes unsung far too often.
I think he's shaken the dust of humeberside off now!

Has formed a superb partnership with Croft definitely didn’t trust him at first and over called so much but you can see now how fluid they are together
