Couple of questions as I have not been able to get to either of the friendlies, however just wonder if those that did attend can give an honest assessment etc on what they have seen and whether it will be good enough as regards going into our first SL game against HUDDS.
Also I`m thinking of going to the game so any advice on parking or local eating places would be greatly appreciated as I`m thinking of setting off quite early to avoid any traffic issues. Is there anything reasonable near to the ground? Thanks

Can’t help with local eating places but I have been to both warm up games. We look ok. Without the 2 additional forwards,Walker and Lawton, the pack looks a bit lightweight. This could be deliberate due to reduced interchanges requiring a more mobile pack. They’ve kept Flanagan in cotton wool. The backs take care of themselves but I hope he plays Johnson or Olpherts instead of Bibby, purely on pace. We’re a bit stuffed if Lussick is injured, until Wood is fit. Dudson looks superfit and motivated, but we look a bit short off the bench. At Huddersfield,I think our halves will run the show and we’ll win comfortably but park close to the ground in case you need to leave before the end 😂

I tend to agree and think that the day of the large heavyweight pack are near, a team like Wakefield who have a huge pack I think will struggle more and more into the season. Someone like Murray will be the new norm for a prop, slightly lighter and more mobile allowing him to do bigger minutes.

I don’t buy into the theory of smaller mobile packs. Big strong forwards ( like Wigan yesterday ) will always dominate in Rugby League. They are professionals and will condition themselves accordingly. Koppy played over 60 minutes unbroken over the weekend. As we all know if your pack is steamrollered and smashed you will leak points and all the skill in the world outside will be worthless. My big concern for the season is the numbers in the squad. The “ big “ teams have 10-15 more senior players in their squads. Injuries are inevitable and we may struggle. It’s nobody’s fault just a fact of finances.

Mobile packs are nothing new. When we first went to the four tackle rule,in the early sixties.Swinton had an innovative coach in Cliff Evans who went with a light mobile pack. They won two championship doing it.Brian Snape appointed Cliff in 1970 and he won a championship with us.At this time others had got the message. So as I say it is nothing new.

I’m quite looking forward to the first couple of games v Hudds and London. I think we’re looking fit . I’m impressed with both Dudson and Turgut in the forwards - both put in lots of hard yards v Wigan. Murray looks in excellent from and I think the timing is perfect for him to step up to the mark and have a fantastic season as a regular prop in the 17 . Olpherts needs work under the high ball but both him and Bibby have bulked up . It doesn’t seem to have affected Olpherts’ speed . Sio looked good.
plus any team with Lui and Hastings in the halves is always going to produce moments of excitement. As regards the debate of mobile props v the big fellas under the new interchange rules , I’m reserve formal judgement until the end of the season , but my gut feeling ( eternal optimist ) is that it’ll be to our advantage. From personal experience ( doc with an interest in sports medicine , used to play RL to a decent standard , now into endurance sports - the big men can be conditioned to a limit BUT there is a definite ceiling ... )
As most other folk have commented - it all depends on how many injuries we sustain , which will be inevitable , but let’s enjoy the ride.
Come to Huddersfield- there should be a good following - the usual away hard core plus extras excited by the new season !
i tend to park at the ground , never really had any major issues getting away

If you are going early, parking at the ground should be no problem.
If you walk then to the opposite end of the ground, you dill find The Rope Walk pub which does food but it gets busy close to game time.

He gets through a lot of work defensively and looks decent in attack as well. I think he'll be a regular in the 17 and reckon he can be a sort of JJ type player that will cover the centres as well as 2nd row/loose. As for Hudds I really fancy us to sneak it. We've got a good record there and if we stand up to them in the forwards we have more than enough in the halves & backs to score tries. We are 11/4 to win the game with a couple of online bookies and I reckon we're worth putting in a 4-timer with Warrington, Cas & Saints.

So as I say it is nothing new. Ken Roberts,Ken Haliwell,Dougie Davis, Graham McKay,Alan Grice, were hardly mobile forwards. My point is you must have tough hard forwards to compete, otherwise you will be smashed. For what it’s worth I believe Cliff Evans is the best coach this club has had in my time. Les Bettinson benefitted by taking over from Mr Evans.

Oh for a coach like Cliff Evans nowadays anywhere in Super League.
Moves aplenty - so many variations. Terrific to watch them unfold.

If Welham is fit (not sure why he didn’t play yesterday) I think he’ll start with Bibby on the wing. Other than that I think the line up above is right

In terms of parking - I’ve never had a problem parking at the ground. Can be slow getting to and into the car park. But it’s ususlly pretty good
If you can go on the train then it is better. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the stadium but there are some cracking pubs and plenty of eateries in the town centre. The real ale pub at the station (the head of steam??) does great beer. There’s a kind of rock pub in the town centre that does amazing burgers. Can’t remember what it’s called though
There aren’t too many good places to eat near the ground but there is a social club a 5 or 10 minute walk where you can get pie and chips and a beer for reasonable prices. It’s the gas club or something like that. Always busy. Beer so so but cheap and cheerful

Welham far better in the centre than Bibbey. Yes,I think he’ll go with Welham definitely, with Johnson on the wing. And I think we’ve named virtually our entire fit squad !
