I’ve just seen that Catalans are being honoured at The BBC Sports Personality of The Year. Great publicity for our game and added to the fact that they will play Wigan at The Nou Camp in May ( a massive deal in those parts ) Big plaudits to the Dragons and here’s hoping that they go from strength to strength.

Did they get to appear on the show when it went out?

Did they get to appear on the show when it went out? The challenge cup win lasted about 10 seconds and either Clare Balding or Gabby Logan stood next to Steve McNamara,Remy Casty and Tony Gigot while they introduced someone else which another few seconds.

I was in Perpignan last week and the paper L’ Independant said they were being given an award by The BBC on SPOTY. Even at my age I still haven’t learned not to believe everything you read in a paper🤓

In my book the only thing better than a Dragons win is of course the win that will never happen, this was great for the game as a whole and brilliant for the game in France.
And I think it's right that we should use this thread to discuss Catalan's likely withdrawal from the CC because of the RFL's insistence on having a £500,000 bond for entry to the competition.
If you think this is okay I want you to imagine if it was a London v SRD final and we were asked to do the same thing because the crowd was low which is what this has been about.
So the Cup Holders may not be in the CC this year which makes the sport look rubbish and essentially it means that the RFL who own this competition can't sell, promote or market a huge final event well enough that they have to take money from possible participants at the start.

The justification is that Catalans are not affiliated with the RFL, but if that's the case and this is a British cup for British teams, then that should have been so from the start, not a knee jerk response to the Catalans winning it. It's a PR own goal of colossal proportions, and I hope Catalans stick to their guns and get reinstated for free.
Attendences are in decline in general. Catalans getting to the final on a previous occasion, as well as London, didn't seem a problem then. It is only one now because the game is so poorly marketed. What the RFL are basically saying is that the cup final can currently only break even if both teams are drawn from Leeds/Wigan/Saints/Hull/Wire maybe Castleford. Any other club makes it then they lose, if two outsiders make it then they are f****d. One could easily imagine a final of ~30,000 if two lower end superleague clubs get there.
Charging outsider teams £500k to be in it is only being attempted to cover up their own failure to market the game. Best sport in the world, and run by the biggest bunch of idiots imagineable. Doesn't half make us look parochial, sore losers, and disinterested in growing the game.

It begs the question if they are worried they will lose money filling Wembley then why not guarantee a full house (whatever the teams) at another location? Tradition and prestige will only get you so far.

If the holders of the CC aren't involved it devalues the whole thing.
What would the RFL do if the planets aligned and the final was say Salford V London? A bumper crowd of 30,000 is the best (at a push) they would get.
Total joke to ask for a bond from any club.

Correct, Let's not forget the RFL Claim to want to spread the game But any the holders of the CC Cup get asked for a Bond Because there not on the Heartlands And then Allow Castleford and Wakefield to play In there Cesspits of stadiums without aby Fine or Points Deduction. Just goes to show the whole organisation is staffed full of Clueless narrow minded "Full of We are a Local sport for local people" Attitude which prevails in Yorkshire.

It is heartening to read so much sense by Salford Fans. I spend 4 months a year around Perpignan and the pride that the cup win gave is brilliant to witness. The RFL should be dismantled in order to remove the executives who are not fit for purpose. They are so out of touch it is frightening. They should be getting behind the fixture at the Camp Nou between Dragons and Wigan and promote the potential good will and interest that will be created within the Spanish Catalans people. To consider not having the holders in this years competition is too ridiculous for words.

The RFL will have to climb down. It’ll be interesting to see whether they manage to achieve that with any degree of class. I suppose Ralph Rimmer might be a decent man,but he’s been horrendously over promoted

If the RFL do drop this ludicrous demand will that not open up another can of worms as both Toronto and Toulouse have waived entry into the cup for financial reasons.
