I voted based on playing career only but can see why extra curricular activity has come into it.
That being said, although I rate Alker I always felt that as a hooker he had too many limitations. If he’d have been a bit bigger he’d have made a wonderful back rower.
I went for Peter Edwards - classy player who was entertaining to watch. Not sure where the lacking ‘x factor’ comes from when he was throwing no look reverse passes on muddy 90s pitches.
Mark Lee was a close second but agree that he might have achieved more at scrum half. His kicking was exceptional- still remember that kick to the wing in his own half at Huddersfield that MacAvoy caught on the full to win the game!

Voted for Alker. The only regular hookers we’ve had during my time have been M.Lee, Alker, T.Lee and Logan. With players like Clough, Owen, Godwin and Howarth thrown in the mix.

Remember Edwards coming over as a more than accomplished #1, if memory is correct think he made his début away at Rochdale at hooker and was an absolute wow and apart from the odd stint at #13 never played in the backs.

Didn’t he play for NZ at fullback?

This was the toughest decision so far for me as a 61 year old who saw the stars of the seventies. I voted for Mark Lee.

I remember the game when Alker, a week after having his appendix removed, late in a game which we had easily lost, chased back over 50 yards to make a try saving tackle. Yes he had his problems afterwards, but I have been voting for how the players performed playing for Salford. Surprised that Dick Evans wasn't in the list, unless I missed his name.

Seasons greetings to everybody. My Dad and myself have been following the votes with interest. Alker's lifestyle is not a problem for me as I wouldn't have voted for him (sorry) if he had gone on to join the priesthood. Don't get me wrong he was a fantastic player and a loyal club man. He always put his body on the line playing through injuries and invariably topped the tackle count but defence not attack was always his strength not unlike Gary Broadbent. That said I remember opposition fans at the time saying that if Alker was picked for his country they wouldn't have any complaints.
We already picked our hookers before they came out. My Dad remembers Ellis Devlin well he came to us from Swinton. My choice was Paul Groves a local lad from Langworthy. He was the best of the choice of hookers in the loose and the nearest I can remember to a modern hooker. He did benefit from us playing in the second division for a season but he had a great turn of pace and often scored from within our own 22. Sorry I don't remember Malc ever doing that because it didn't happen. That said I think Alker will win the vote hands down.
I liked Mark Lee but must have been asleep when Peter Edwards was playing. I'd like to mention Paul O' Neill. He did play for Great Britain against Papua New Guinea at Central Park and was in our second division 1982 side that knocked Leigh the then reigning champions out of the Challenge Cup.

Lacking X factor may have been harsh or the wrong wording. He was fantastic for us and I loved watching him play. I just think Alker was more than just a hooker whereas Edwards was a very good hooker and player for us. His transformation from international standard full back to hooker was fantastic and I meant no criticism of him As for Mark Lee’s kick to McAvoy at Huddersfield, I remember it well. Was a fantastic moment and one that led to much embarrassment. On the season highlights video the camera panned over to where we were stood after that last second win. It zoomed in just in time to show me having a good old scratch of my balls....

Who was Dick Evans , or is this a wind up ? No, not a wind up. Signed from Swinton. Early 70s I think. Real tough nut. And, like Peter Smethurst, played with a huge smile on his face.
