Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont has issued the following statement:
It was with a heavy heart and tear in my eye that the realisation sunk in that we would not make the Qualifiers. I have said publicly on numerous occasion and privately to the group that my position as owner of the Club would become untenable should that happen.
The Club will receive circa £200k in 2019 from £1.25m this year and circa £1.7m in 2017 and that is a drop too far to sustain the Club in its current form. To that end I must act in the best interests of the Club’s ability to survive going forward and in the short term to fulfil this season’s fixtures and also to reduce its commitments to make it more attractive to any party that may express an interest in taking it forward.
This week is deadline week and therefore an ideal opportunity for players to be able to secure their futures elsewhere and at the same time reduce the Club’s obligations. I can confirm there will be a large number of exits and that may bring some opportunities for others but that will be ongoing this week right up until deadline.
I am committed to ensuring the Club reaches the end of the season and hope during that time a new investor or group of investors can be attracted to take the Club forward. I will be making a more detailed statement at the beginning of next week and until then will not be in a position to comment further. I apologise to our loyal fans and sponsors for this failing which ultimately has to rest with me

Step forward the Doc?
The trolling of Leigh fans and the owner makes me want to laugh at this but ultimately this is another heartland club who is going to struggle going forward.
Sad to realise but the Leigh's, Salford's and Widnes's of this world are on a slippery slope as long as teams from North America can ride in with massive backing and seemingly help from the RFL.

As cold as this sounds, it would be a good opportunity for us to get some of better Leigh players in for the start of next season IF we secure SL status.

Very sad day for the game. It’s clear that none of us take any satisfaction from this state of affairs. The game is the loser

Sad when a heartland club is struggling like this, it's not just them either. And it shows how getting relegated would be a total disaster for us, unless we managed to bounce back after only one season.

Spot on lemmy and shows that we need to be humble about Leigh's demise as this could be Salford if we don't retain SL status. It would seem as though Leigh went for the 'boom or bust' approach, putting all of their eggs in to one basket and hoping that they would bounce straight back at the first attempt. I suspect that London and Halifax wouldn't be in the same situation if they didn't make the Middle 8's. It's backfired on Leigh enormously.

Shows that in rugby even with a benefactor the business plan of speculate to accumulate can backfire hugely if you fail to hit the target set. Also shows where we would be unless we use this year and next few at least to scale back and rebuild sustainably. Even with a relegation we would be able to cope with the reduced parachute payment for 2019. The problem would arise in 2020 if promotion wasnt achieved immediately. The Wakefield model is the one to follow, gradual improvement each season linked with gradual increase in spending but only if the income allows.

It is a sad state of affairs, the game is bleeding away. With reference to our own plight, not sure what the figures are today on us raising funds, however last time I looked we had raised around £3500! On the face of this it looks good but only 75 supporters care enough to try & make something happen. Who would want to invest in a sport with such a low demand.

I suspect that there is a bit of money being raised 'offline' which isn't yet reflected on the total fundraising amount. For most people I think Friday is pay day, in which case I reckon there will be more supporters making a contribution.

As we know, sadly Leigh won't be the last club in this position. RFL are more interested in expanding the game elsewhere rather than helping the smaller clubs clinging by a thread.
The priority now is more about making the game a global epic for Sky. Toronto, New York, Toulouse, Cats etc... Unfortunately, apart from the big 4, I can see this becoming a familiar sad trend. Unless these clowns at the RFL start to invest some serious money into grass roots RL, the super league will be unrecognisable in 10 years.

Why is it the RFL’s problem if clubs can’t manage themselves sensibly? The RFL bashing because of poorly run clubs who don’t have any solid or sensible plans is boring. Rugby League is dying beacause ye old age rugby league fans are clinging on to the good old days where bailing out dying clubs is a form of ‘progression’

I think they’ve had some quality guys at the top but the Wood regime was rotten and typified with his ludicrous exit deal, insofar as the numbers in the public domain are correct.

Very sad BUT - is he waving his white lag a bit early?
If Leigh beat Sheffield, which I expect them to do. There are 4 clubs above them they can leapfrog.
Featherstone are probably out of the race with a trip to Toronto.
Toulouse and Halifax have home advantage over Dewsbury & Rochdale so we can expect them to win.
London have a long trip up to Barrow. Could there be an upset there? If so Leigh could be in the middle 8 having sold off their squad and destroyed any chance they have.

I read Beaumont's statement as saying that in order to fulfil their remaining fixtures and solve their financial predicament, they would have to sell their players before the transfer window closes on Friday. Otherwise they would be obligated to pay the remainder of their player contracts until the transfer window re-opens before the new season. Sounds like a big cash flow issue.
