I managed to catch up with a few old friends and extended family over Christmas and we inevitably got onto the subject of Salford and the ups and downs of being a fan. Crowd numbers was mentioned and what we all agreed on was how many more City shirts you see now on the kids in and around Salford. Go back 10 years and you never saw any, but now, walking round the precinct or anywhere and you're bound to see some. One of my cousins is a teacher at a school in Salford and he said how many more kids are coming through now that are City fans. This has come on the back of their successes over the past 8-10 years. I don't have the stats but I'd be interested to see how many trophy's City & Utd have each won in the past 10 years.
I suppose the point is one we all know deep down, in order to increase fans, the club needs to be patient and needs a prolonged (4,5,6+ years) of success. Kids will support a winning team simple as. I hope we get off to a good start again but I still don't think fans will come flooding in until we win silverware and/or a a genuine constant threat for a few years.
anyway only 4 weeks till the first game.

Success would obviously increase numbers as people tend to jump on the band wagon when teams are winning silverware. RL unfortunately doesn't have anywhere near the same publicity/media coverage that football does, hence the City popularity increase. Salford have shown that numbers are definitely there with the last seasons turn out in the semi. Hopefully another good cup run and even a Wembley appearance (dare I say it) would kick start things.

I think the other point I was trying to raise is that there is a generation of kids coming through now that have only known a successful City team whereas 10 years ago that wasn't the case.
