Olpherts: strengths back line with no loses
Bennion: j walne hardly played so no loss
French lad: squad player with size

Scrum half with kicking game

1 second row- pending BMM, could be 2
So 6 players need to strengthen the squad and push on
Contract offers are out and people are at World Cup to see if they can push up their value.
Not a disaster, scrum half need and main priority.

Just to tie in with this, we currently have a squad of 26 and cas had a squad of 32 last year.
No major surgery needed (bar SH) just bulking up.
I'd rather they did it correctly and diligently than rush it. Way to is a perfectionist and I trust him! Keep the faith

Scrum half is the worry for me.
Good ones are like rocking horse sh1t and good ones available to offer contracts to, even rarer. I'm sure we'll pick up a few uninspiring, but hopefully hungry forwards and squad players, but that key position needs to be the focus.

I think if you check we have a squad of 24 less Ben and Tasi who look likely to be leaving plus the French guy ie 23.
We had five more than this last year and Watson said the squad was too small, maybe need 30-32. So if my maths is correct we need another 7-9 this year.Tall order.
MK says another 4 or 5 quality players, which if one is the French lad takes us to 26. So it's all a mystery, as per usual!
What I can't understand is that we were supposed to be recruiting when we were sure of our place in SL. And to date nobody of any significance.

Agree with most of above but the question pops up again about FB and Gaz or Niall. Who's best suited to that position? Will the other get pi55ed off if not getting a game? Or will Gaz start at 7 and our recruitment be in other areas? I know some say he's not up to it but it's not up to us and it depends what Watto sees as priority. One thing is for sure-only time will tell, until next season starts its all rumour and speculation.
I'm looking forward to seeing Olpherts turn out, looks like he's got the pace we need in the back line and Mossop should be like a new signing too. 2 or 3 forwards maybe 4 IF it's true about BMM and half back cover. As long as they all 'fit' top 8 should be realistic target.

Said it before, and as unpopular an opinion as it was, I'll say it again. I would be ring St Helens every day for an update on Matty Smith's future. He is type of organizer we badly need.

At one point I would have said no to this but it's an idea that's grown on me, can't see 2 running halves having the same impact as a schemer and a runner. One thing that really does (maybe the only one) excite me is seeing both Flash and TM in the same team, both excellent grafters, ball handlers and leaders. For me we are still at least 6 new players short of survival, we got extremely lucky last year that our injuries were loaded towards the back end of the season, get them at the start and we'll be dead in the water. |

Yeah I agree. I was initially not keen on Smith coming back, but the more this pre-season goes on the more it seems like a good idea. I don't mind a team of grafters, but we need more of them and I just can't see us getting the numbers in required at the moment. |

FWIW as things stand I'd be pretty happy with Smith, could see him complimenting Lui. An out and out organiser and kicker, let Lui take the line on and do the flashy stuff. |
