Hi. redpiperman and I are going to get a 14ft x 6ft flag made in time for the Semi Final and so far it looks like this (you might need to click on the image to make it full size): When I posted this on social media, a few fans pointed out that while the club was founded in 1873, it didn't take the Salford name until 1879. So my question is, am I right to put Est. 1873 on this flag or not? Also FYI - this particular coat of arms was chosen as it appears on one of our old shirts (possibly from the late 70's?). Cheers.

I feel that it should be 1879.

It’s up to you. I would say 1873 whereas others go with 1879 – both have valid arguments. That coat of arms is from 1974 onwards.

I'd say 1879. We were a Manchester club in 1873 and you know just how sensitive some people are about Manchester.

There have been a few banners over the years with 1873 on. Either is fine. I wouldn’t worry about it too much

Because that's where Broughton is.

Decided to pluck for 1879 in the end with a 14f x 8ft flag. Hoping it's ready in time for the Semi Final.

Formed in 1873 under the name Cavendish. Played in Moss Side until moving to Salford in 1875, still under the Cavendish name. Over the next few years, the club moved grounds a couple of times, moving further in to Salford each time. It changed its name to Salford in 1879. The club celebrated its centenary in 1979, so 1879 sounds right.

I don’t wish to labour this because 1879 is fine for that very reason. However, Cavendish and Salford were the same administration, and the lineage back to 1873 is clear. If it weren’t for the then club secretary, Archie Sutherland, Salford would have remained as Cavendish (and quite possibly perished not long afterward). Manchester United and Manchester City were established in 1878 and 1880 respectively but under different names too. In fact, Manchester United’s claim is more tenuous as Newton Heath were pretty much dead and buried in 1902 before investors salvaged the club and changed its name and colours.

John Wilkinson should be hauled over the coals for confusing the centenary with the centenasextantry (probably not a word) in 1979. A rookie error.
