The '69 semi final was against Warrington at Wigan - the other way 'round this year. I was 14 years of age at the time and left for the game with my mates on public transport at 10 o'clock in the morning - dead keen!
We won of course and this year's semi is bringing all the memories back, in particular when Stuart Whitehead scored a try that gave way to the best Rugby League picture of all time in my humble opinion, because as Whitehead dived over the line, a Warrington player has hold of his shorts to reveal the bare arse of the scorer and the referee big Eric Clay, is lying on the ground pointing for the try having been tripped in the melee as we scored!!
I would really like to see the photo again if anybody has a copy or can point me in the right direction.
Can we hear any other memories of this game please?
I notice that I write this at 10.00 am when the tickets go on sale - spooky!
Jimmy

Great story jimmyhardacre. A bit before my time this one but I'll do my best to find that photo for you. I believe there were over 97,000 fans at the Cup Final that year at Central Park. Staggering!

bgm, I think the excitement is getting to you. CUP FINAL at CENTRAL PARK, 97,000. Did you mean SEMI_FINAL at CENTRAL PARK, 97,000. I'd still find that staggering!

Sorry tony13 you are right - the Final wasn't at Central Park that year (I had a few too many beers last night so my brain isn't working much today!). Not sure what the attendance was for the Semi Final.

And laid out by the Cas prop (Dennis Hartley?) off the ball with an elbow from the kick off in the first minute of the final. Of course the ref missed it and Billy played the rest of the match with concussion! By the way if you speak to Chris Hesketh, who attends the odd game, he did score that try!

Billy Burgess had the most sublime turn of speed that wasn't visible to the eye. Before he signed for us my mate and I went to Central Park to watch Wigin and Barrow - Bill scored a long range try for Barrow and we swooned over him. He was a class above mere mortals like Fielding etc. I'll be cryin' in a minute - look away. Jimmy

Agree to both comments Redjack - perfectly true. Jimmy

I remember him sidestepping Charlton beautifully before Paul signed and Charlton almost pirouetted and caught him anyway. You have a scrike if you want, real men watch and play league and real women too!

Whenever, they're referred to as Classy Cas I have to laugh, good side, Hardisty a star but "Classy" is not what I remember them for!

Spoke to Hardisty at Cas last season about the Salford side. Watkins in particular. Classy he was certainly not. Great shame, I expected better. Total lack of class

The '69 Final was a bit before my time as a rugby fan. In '69, I was a dyed-in-the-wool Man City fan and only switched to rugby in '76. All I know about the Final is that it was a low-scoring affair and Salford had a try disallowed. Is there a video of it available? Or is it online (YouTube?)?
