A few years ago I was lucky enough to go to the NRL Grand Final in Sydney and one thing I thought they did very well was that before the teams came out to warm up and the actual pitch was empty of anybody else, the match MC announcer walked to the centre spot hushed the crowd and announced the names of each player that was retiring that season after playing 200 games in the NRL.
After their name was announced each player walked to the centre spot with spotlights trained on him and the crowd showed their appreciation in the time honoured way. Sure there was a little friendly banter towards some of the players, but on the whole it was a great experience to hear 70,000 fans coming together as one to thank a player for the blood and guts they had given for 'our' cause, the cause of Rugby League.
Do you think the RL should do this at the GF or perhaps that Salford could do it at our last home game when one of our Players retires?

Whole heartedly yes, unless you are a Sinfield or Peacock very little seems to be done to recognise people who play the hardest sport. Have often thought that the RFL should produce special rings to celebrate a player reaching 200, 300 + games. Think Stuart Littler would need to be from Leigh he'd need that many fingers to put his rings on

Absolutely agree.
I think what they do in Oz regarding this is a fantastic thing to do for players who've given their best years for our entertainment.

Good post Jimmy,
Totally agree not enough is done in RL to recognise players with long service to the game. Pis*es me off when I see bang average players in other sports being rewarded with testimonial games etc.. after they've spent most of their careers being pampered and virtually stealing a living with ridiculous salaries. The hierarchy need to look at what they're doing in aus and give our players the credit they deserve for getting their bodies smashed week in week out.

Great post. Watch every game from the NRL , the respect they have for the players is fantastic. Player welfare etc. Do you really think the RFL give one hoot about the players over here in the UK. If they did? there would be no bank holiday matches, player welfare. No magic weekend, money to the RFL, None of this stupid top 8 games. bottom 4 top 4 rubbish. .more money to the RFL, The RFL is not fit for anything, apart from lining there own pockets. Inviting the players that retire that season, might cost the RFL some money , so there is no chance what so ever of that happening over here.
