Just turned the BBC on and clicked on the Salford game but for some reason Ray French and someone called Addy are having a private conversation that is going out on air.
They are saying Widnes should go back part time as the squad depth is terrible and the kids coming in after #17 aren't the right quality. That they are losing £10,000 per week minimum. They have just asked how on earth Salford & Wakefield are allowed to pay players £100,000+ wages when all they have is RFL hand outs. Saying how good Ian Watson is as a coach. How RU is circling looking for all the best players. Saying that Watson has got rid of all the trouble makers. That it is time Todd Carney delivered as he is on a holiday so far. French saying Widnes never had any free loaders when he was there and that Saints only ever brought over top quality grafters from the NRL. That it's the best Salford away following they have seen for a while. That they expect Salford to win. Slating the commitment of Warringtons players. French saying he has seen nothing from Carney to support him being such a good player in the NRL. 'This guy BMM' is a big guy'. BRILLIANT bit coming up. Addy :- Benthams the ref, French :- is he? Addy :- Yes French :- he's just not a good ref. This Junior Sa'u is a good player, such a strong lad and very consistent. Johnson has got such pace GOB found his position at the back and that Warrington regret letting him go. Complaining there's not much room in the seats and that they need 3 seats each (fat bastards LOL).
Live on air now, just gold, pure gold.

Off again at half time.
The back row from Warrington have been lauded too much. Sick of interviewing Tony Smith after he's lost as he's such a good guy. They fear for the Warrington defence. Saying no Warrington player is inspiring the crowd. French saying the Warrington pack lacks passion and that the pack isn't as strong as people think, saying our pack is full of fire and hardness for unknown players. Addy? Saying Salford are just as good as Castleford and again all down to the coaching.

I listened to the commentary and French, I'm pretty sure, is actually a Henson studios animatronic puppet. A few of his best bits...
Murdoch-Massala Brian O'Brien Salford are in again and the Warrington fans are roaring... Rob Loo-eye Gareth Brown (?) 22 - 4 and that four pointer makes it...What does that make it Adie? Brian Atkins
Honestly, it was so difficult at some points I had no idea what was going on. Ray needs to hang his boots up now, it's actually quite sad.

I, too, listened to that rubbish. It was embarrassingly bad. Anyone new to the game would be wondering what on Earth was going on. Time to go, Ray.

Ray French didn't have a clue what was going on half tbe time. Good job Ady had more of an idea. His constant use of "er" after every other word is bad enough but today he was embarrassing. "Warrington are in there with Jake Bibby " 22nd minute" they're all applauding for some reason" (seriously?) When Evalds went over for his second I had no idea who scored because he gave it to both Sa'u and Evalds then comes out with "Jack Russell, hands on knees". "Patton kicking in the absence of MATT Gidley ". "James Lui" Brining scores "Warrington fans are jumping up and down". "Hauraki given a green card" I agree with you though, he needs to hang the mic up.

I listened on Wire FM and it was good commentary. They were very complimentary about good this Salford side is. Fair play to them.

Can't believe French is still commentating, he was past it in the 1990s! He must have been doing the BBC website as well - on the match report it (rightly) says Evalds got a hat-trick but when you click on the result it says he got 2 and Sau got 3. It said Leeds had won 30-28 for a while too!

I listen to his commentary quite a lot and have to agree it's time for him to retire.

No he's got to stay, he's the new Eddy Wareing. For those who remember him he was brilliant like'you can tell we're getting to the end of the match cos the shadows are lengthening' at a floodlight match. 'It's only 2 minutes to 10 minutes to go'
And there are lots more, let's have some.

I thought the "green card" was brilliant. Is there something we should know? Is the relocation actually to Manchester, New Hampshire, and Weller is the first to get his green card? At half-time we were 'treated' to an open mike. Twenty minutes of background crowd noise with occasional snatches of conversation. RF was obviously talking to someone on the phone or by radio link and we got one half of the conversation - RF's half. I lost count of the number of times he said "Warrington" when he should have said "Salford" - the Warrington fans jumping up and down was only one such.
He has been a great servant to the game, but it is definitely time to hand the mike to someone younger. I do think the game should look after him, though. Invite him to games as a VIP guest, but keep him in the hospitality suites, as far from the mike as possible.

Eddie Waring was kept on by the BBC long after his dementia had set in, and that was reflected in his commentaries. I'd hate to think Ray French was being treated the same way. It may be comedy rubbish, but there's a disturbing hint of deja vu about it.
