I’m just really interested to know what other people thoughts are on this subject without creating a thread that turns into keyboard warfare. I’d just like to hear any views from fellow supporters who think ‘Manchester’ Red Devils could be a positive move and why? Personally I can’t see how it would increase numbers and I think it’s more likely to have the opposite effect. Could I be narrow minded and missing something?

I don't think a name change would help. What makes me smile though is if there were to be a rename/ rebrand then it would be marketed and advertised. Why not spend that budget on promoting the club now, beyond the city of Salford borders I did read a quote the other day that made me think though, ' the light bulb was not invented as a result of the continuous improvement of the candle'
For the record I'm not for a name change and whilst moving to a more accessible location may help my understanding is we're tied to the AJ Bell for a long time and I can't see the Council letting us leave because what would they do with it then ?

whilst moving to a more accessible location may help Has this contributed to the problem? The new roads and public transport links for the stadium/ Port Salford were meant to happen about 2-3 years ago.

I'm convinced 70-80% of our core support could walk to the willows. Maybe the infrastructure around the ground with a couple of successful years will increase the gate numbers but the Doc doesn't seem to be prepared to wait. I'd still like to think this is all talk in an attempt to generate column inches and increase crowds.

I expected this reaction when I created the thread. Does anyone know if there are actually any pro Manchester supporters within our fanbase?

If I thought that a name change would solve our problems then I'd still support the club. I don't think he's thinking of moving from the AJB, so it'd be purely a name change. Therefore I don't think it'd make any positive difference, just alienate our core support, which is daft.

I spent a long time trying to think of advantages which cannot be easily contradicted by keeping "Salford": there must be some as the Lowry Centre uses Manchester in their title. The obvious one is the bigger population to log into but this founders once you go to the next stage which is the expected success rate. Then there's the historic idea of Manchester having more prestige than Salford, especially to Londoners. Certainly Manchester is having business boom at the moment and perhaps the Doc hopes the Manchester moniker will attract Chinese or Arabic money. It did for City (OK it also did for t'other City). It certainly has a better ring for outsiders as investors ... but outsiders will not make up supporters.

I have only been a fan over the past couple of seasons (season ticket) and am now completely hooked. Yes even when we were bang average last season!
I have a few points and I hope my reasons for these are not taken the wrong way!
1. I have no affiliation to Salford the City itself and am not Salfordian, therefore the name change per se wouldn't bother me as I cannot directly relate to the club's history. I would therefore continue to go to the matches if the name change happened.
2. I do however see lifelong fans pure anger and frustration at the possibility of this name change because it will, in their eyes, cease to be the same club the second the name changes and the feelings, love and emotion they have poured into it will be lost. As I said I can see that and completely understand it. (Though as said in point one I don't feel it myself, being a jolly come lately glory hunter 😄)
3. The ONLY reason I can see remotely that a name change MAY have benefits is in the Sponsorship, Marketing, hospitality and promotion of the club. So basically the non-fans revenue. It may be (I have no facts to back this up though) that the name Manchester has more business clout and therefore could bring in more revenue through that way rather than relying on bums on seats as it were.
Let me finish though by saying I do think it's a completely insane idea and that the club need more patience. recent promotions and marketing aside it doesn't appear they have been reaching out into the right areas long enough and it seems blatantly obvious that a winning team on the pitch will bring more crowds in. It will just take time.

COMPLETE agreement with you, But and a big But, if he does change the name , he can not stop us chanting SALFORD RLFC. or wearing our SALFORD shirts, scarfs, etc etc, And most of all it is the players we are supporting, they are not to blame if the idiot in charge changes there club name. So keep the faith, and support the players, and WEAR YOUR SALFORD SHIRT WITH PRIDE.

It's worth mentioned that Salford has a higher growth rate of start ups and businesses than Manchester does, in fact it has the highest in the UK I read this in the MEN just a other week (although I can't find the article online).

There's about 700 businesses in the Quays. My guess is that RHP (why wasn't the middle name Ian?) was given the task of getting in corporate membership, can't do it, so we've got the wrong name! And MK thought this is a way to get good publicity. And guess what..........he has! Well done mate.
He wants 4500, for the Catalan game, so how about him getting some jockeys and his racing mates down? Ps do jockeys get in half price?

I wonder what people would think of Simply adding Manchester to the name along with Salford. Would people still see this as an affront? something along the lines of "The Red Devils of Manchester and Salford" or vice versa. I know its simplistic and im not really suggesting that name as such as its maybe a bit clunky, but is it a compromise people could live with? I know that Sale Sharks did something similar which didnt have a huge impact, but Sale is a part of Manchester as apposed to a separate city. I would prefer to stay as Salford Red Devils ideally but i can see possible benefits to being more inclusive with our Neighbours. Perhaps this would be a way of maintaining a semblance of heritage and identity? Would be interested to hear what people thought, without any vitriol. Im sure im not the first one to suggest this but i dont seem to remember it being mentioned on any other threads, but apologies if im covering old ground.

Salford & Manchester Red devils could be the compromise for all parties. It brings in the supposed business power and wider appeal of Manchester (If these things are to be believed) and actually adds more heritage to the Club by bringing back the Salford name to the club. I don't think it's that clunky either. If the club were determined to add Manchester this is the way it should be done in my opinion.
