Just to add to my original post, does anyone remember when and why we changed to Salford City Reds early to mid 2000's I think. I'm sure the reason gave was that by adding City to to the club name we'd attract / appeal to Manchester City fans that wouldn't want to be associated with a Red club ? as we all know the Willows was suddenly flooded with thousands of MCFC fans that had previously stayed away. My point being we've tried name changes to try and attract new fans. For me, we / the club needs to look beyond the City boundary of Salford and get in the Trafford Centre or Manchester City Centre and sell itself there. As I recall it, "City" was added to the name by John Wilkinson, who took umbrage at the idea that Salford, Oldham, etc. should merge and call themselves "Manchester". He wanted to emphasise that Salford is a city. As for marketing away from Salford, I think the club already do that, in their limited way. The question is whether a name change would help in that effort. I don't think it would. All it would do would be to piss off a sizeable proportion of the current support.

I think tonight has been the first time I've ever been angry with other Salford fans, predominantly on Social Media.
As things stand, the rumours are just that - rumours. The Club should confirm or deny the rumours before it gets seriously out of hand and people lose their minds.
So far this evening I've heard half a dozen different accounts of what's happened, what's been said, and when the name change is going to be announced. I've heard that we're merging with Manchester Rangers (who average 2-4k every week according to the source - the actual number last season was 358), that the merger is going to be announced before the Koukash/Beaumont weigh-in on Magic Weekend, that it 'could' be Greater Manchester Red Devils etc. It's ridiculous.
I've also seen people calling MK a C*nt, a disgrace, and that he should hang his head in shame. This sort of behaviour on the back of a rumour? Absolutely pathetic.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'll have a few choice words if the rumour is substantiated, but as things stand the knee-jerk reaction to all of this has been quite frankly embarrassing.

Just takes one word from Marwan or blease to put it all to bed, the fact he hasn't surely must worry you??
If he does do this, c*** would be too nice of a name.

Playing Devils' Advocate for a minute - some of the vitriol being spewed on Social media right now is unacceptable... "Shove Manchester up your f*cking arse you f*cking bald-headed c*nt" is the latest in a line of things being said to him. If I was him I'd tell the fans where to stick it.
FWIW, I completely agree that MK or IB should confirm or deny the rumours as soon as possible. The situation is already out of hand.

Twitter in particular seems to be a gathering place for morons. While highly emotive the rumour is just a name change. Reading some of the comments on Twitter you'd think Koukash was about to release nerve agent into Salford's districts in a bid to ethnically cleanse Greater Manchester. Reality. Grip. Get hold of.

Yes I agree, people shouldn't be abusing anyone on social media or otherwise, however I'm sure Marwan has reacted badly on twitter before he should be aware of how people can overreact, and should be able to take a few nasty names without taking his ball home.
To many people this is their life, they plan their years around Salford and have done for years, decades. You can't mess about with stuff like this, it's not just a play thing.

The thing is it's pretty much more or less true with a few details twisted. We are having a major rebrand to be announced some point during the Magic Weekend as we all know Koukash loves to have all eyes on him instead of the boys. The sponsors have all known for weeks now with apparently most on board with it. Paul himself was solely brought in to see the transition through and to help start up in Manchester. And for once Koukash has the full backing of the RFL who'll allow us to play in the Manchester Ladies ground even if it's not up to RFL minium size. The speed it of suggest the RFL truly do want Salford out of Rugby and are quickly looking for any means necessary. Sad day.

This is now about the 6th different rumour I've heard this evening. Not all of them, if any, can be true.

Even if we re-branded to 'Manchester Red Devils', it couldn't be in a worse location for tapping into crowds. The name 'Red Devils' wont pull in any offers to City fans, and most Salford fans are United supporters so wont draw them in either! I can see the sense of moving to a smaller venue with all the financial implications that brings, plus the facilities will be top notch. I just think that probably half the hardcore support will probably abandon the club, which is stupid for them and the Club.

Good points, also why have the Rfl suddenly developed this hatred of Salford? The apparent dislike has only come about since the doc shouted his mouth off, why would they back him? I don't see that.
Seems odd.

I don't know how true or otherwise these rumours are. Having said that, I do know that if this rebrand were to happen, the RFL would see the club as being in a development area and make extra funding and resources available to them. This money would not be for playing staff but for a sustainable marketing plan and office staff/equipment. The RFL will be well on board with this change as they've wanted a SL club in Manchester since before 1996.
Personally, if this rumour turned out to be true, I would still go and watch the club as I love the sport too much not to go to at least one live game a week. I can see though why a large proportion of the supporters would choose not to continue.
I can see some of MK and IB's reasoning behind the rumoured rebrand but to me, any marketing strategy which starts by alienating a number of the few current supporters that we have seems ridiculous.

I find it interesting that the Salford fans making themselves look like spoiled kids on social media, who are up in arms about a rumoured name change to Manchester. Are the same people who religiously follow Manchester United.
You couldn't make it up.

Don't see why that's relavent carnster? nobody is saying they hate Manchester, it's not an anti Manchester thing. United are a global brand, salford (and indeed no rugby club with the exception of the all blacks) ever will be. Salford means so much more to these people.
I live in Warrington, and I remember the furore around renaming as "Cheshire cats" or whatever it was back in the early 90s. It's a very emotive thing
