Salford have made statement re investigation into Carney incident. What happened ? It seemed really odd. Smith had basically lost control of the game and Salford were on the end of some poor decisions, especially when cheap shots were being ignored. Toronto had scored and the Salford players were gathering between the posts, next thing, Smith just straight red cards Carney. There was no coming together between him and the official, just walked over and did it. Now it's quite possible that he has said something in passing so I wont say he has or he hasn't, but I'd say it has to be fairly serious for a red card to be shown for dissent. The only precedent I can recall is Tallis in Australia who got sent off and banned quite badly for calling a Ref a 'cheat'. All speculation I may add.

I was sat quite close to the incident and couldn't figure out what had happened. I know Ryan Bailey was in Carney's face just before the red card was shown. My assumption was that it was for dissent or some form of verbal abuse, but then I overheard some fans saying that it was for spitting.
The game itself was completely frustrating. I don't have a problem with teams being physical but when that physicality becomes plain ugly with intent to cause injury, the referee has to reign it back in and take control of the game. The referee today was absolutely abysmal from start to finish and deserved all the pelters he got from the fans.

It's all immaterial regarding the game. We woke up the minute the thug Ryan Bailey came onto the pitch and started ballooning as only he can. It was like watching super league 20 years ago. No surprise given nobby was involved ;we saw how his neanderthal tactics worked before he was sacked. We toughed it out with 12 men for 55 minutes and would not buckle under the filthy tactics employed by the opposition. We have a squad full of real men who will not be intimidated. Great day 😆

Apparently, one of them said he'd called a Toronto player a 'Black C@@t' when in fact Carney has said that he called him a 'Fat C@@t'. What also makes this claim by the official suspect, is one glaring problem... Justin Carney's Dad is black. So very unlikely for this to be true.

It did strike me as odd to racially abuse someone when your of mixed race yourself.
Thing is though if it is found to be incorrect then yet again a poor decision could have had massive repercussions for Salford.
The games becoming a bloody joke right now, the officials seem to crave the spotlight more than the players.

Just a thought but doesn't Carney deserve an apology for this? To say someone racially abused another person is a terrible slur, especially to someone of mixed parentage.

TBF, I'm not sure we can take it as read that he didn't racially abuse him purely on the basis that he is mixed heritage himself. I'm slightly larger than a size 8 but hasn't stopped me calling a few people a fat cnut over the years!😂 However, I'm not making light of the situation tho as this could have massive repercussions if proved true. Hopefully, it's a complete misunderstanding and JC can prove his innocence. I had an alert on my phone from the Salford Star (don't ask me how as I don't read the rag!) and apparently it was the TJ that flagged the incident to the ref.
This raises a few points.
1) If evidence is found that proves he did racially abuse the player then a massive ban is in the offing. Regardless of provocation racism can't be tolerated in the game and any perpertrator should have the book thrown at them.
2) If it is proven that JC didn't racially abuse him then there has to be an apology from the TJ, Ref & the RFL and a full statement clearing JC of any wrongdoing. Something like this sticks (Ron Atkinson anyone?).
3) If no audio can be found to prove innocence/confirm guilt, does the report of the Ref/TJ become gospel and leave JC with no defence and he's guilty as charged? I'd assume the player he's alleged to have abused would have reacted to any slur as I know I'd be swinging a few haymakers if that sort of abuse was aimed at me. I couldn't make the game yesterday so was there any sort of reaction?
As for the win, bit closer than I'd hoped for but we're in the next round and that's all that matters. Swinton anyone?😂
Btw, any idea on the crowd? Assume it was pretty low based on the fact that Utd & City were both playing. Great weekend all round results wise... Wins for Saford Rugby, Salford City & Utd, followed by defeats for City and the bin dipper. Just need Lancs to turn Somerset over today for a full house!👍😁

Someone on RL Fans has mentioned Ryan Bailey as the alleged victim of the abuse. Is he the sort of guy to turn the other cheek?

Think the warm balls for the next round will be us and Hull KR.
Bailey isn't exactly known for being a well educated level headed chap so you'd think if Carney had called what he alleged to he'd have exploded and got himself binned off also. You would hope that it is a case of the touchy mishearing Carney that Bailey would do the decent thing and back him up, honour amongst thieves type thing.
All the talk of Toronto being dirty was it deliberate? Think Noble would have had a hand in it if it was.

Looking forward to some dreadlocked bongo player from The Guardian performing an in-depth investigation into body-shaming in Rugby League.

With something as serious as this, the RFL will need to tread carefully. It does seem unlikely that he's said it so it depends on just how certain the linesman is. If he's 100% then that's it. I've said on here numerous times that Smith is extremely decisive,as if that's a substitute for correct decisions. It seems to have happened so quickly, were they really certain? I just hope that they don't close ranks because it'd stick with him during the rest of his career.

Careful, the RFL might consider them for a League 1 spot in 2018.
