The salary cap hasn't changed for umpteen years which means, in real terms, that it's gone down. This change to the amount clubs can spend really does little more than partly redress that.
I used to be a fan of the salary cap, but nowadays I'm less sure that it's doing the job we think it is. The new regulations have added more exemptions (the two marquee players) to the ones that were already there which, it seems to me, render it meaningless. In addition, there are obvious ways of circumventing it. Just off the top of my head, for example, you could give a player two contracts: one that you declare the the RFL, and one that you don't. Then - and here's the clever part - you keep the second contract secret by not getting yourself dragged through the courts for non-payment.
I suspect now that the cap is more honoured in the breach than the observance, and it has only two real functions: firstly, to cause a drain of top talent away from the game in this country (because any British club suddenly signing a Thurston or a Cronk would almost inevitably have to be in breach of the cap) and secondly to give followers of the sport something to bellyache about. and, like dangling a Mars Bar in front of a fat kid, it's the last thing they need.

Pros and cons both ways.
I will say though, that the outcry that I've heard so far are just digs at Salford and MK. Which is a bit pointless as we don't spend to the current cap and don't have a marquee player. The game has needed to increase the cap for quite a while and rather than do it when required they are deciding to do it all at once after the damage has been done. Damage being the loss of players to RU and the NRL.
As for the calls to have a second string side, well I agree, all clubs should have a second string side but what's it got to do with the cap? This argument is from people who are directly targeting our Club presuming that we're off looking to spend the maximum amount possible and getting in two marquee players. The reality is that we're cutting back and haven't got any marquee players yet.
It's all vested interest from certain corners worried about their own slice of things.
In reality, we needed a raise just to keep up with yearly inflation if nothing else. This at least goes some way into stepping into the right direction.

I've been trying my hardest, but I cannot think who it could be......do we really have two current Marquee in the UK? I'd doubt the first is a marque aswell tbh ;-)
If we hadn't been well under the cap anyway, I'd have said TC prestige wise.

Most likely a current England International, who the RU or Aussies would be keen to sign. I can only think of Kallum Watkins

I thought I read somewhere wire had given big pay rises to Clark and hill, possibly Clark could be the other marquee? It can't be burgess can it, could only have 1 per team until now?
Other than Wigan can only think of wire or Leeds who would be likely, at Leeds as mentioned possibly Watkins or maybe parcell?

You would have thought that the RFL/SL required all Marquee players to be announced as such.
Pretty certain Kyle Eastmond will be returning to RL in the immediate future so there's one and can see Warrington splashing out on a top notch play maker for next season to prevent a repeat of what's happened this year so far for them.
Personally think if we go down the Marquee route it will be for a Gallen type figure, though I'd much rather bring in a real strike centre/winger, as for all the good rugby we are playing for me we still need someone capable of getting up towards the 20+ scores a season mark.

George Williams has signed a new 4 year deal at Wigan and has become their 2nd marquee signing alongside Sam Tomkins.
