What did people think of the player cam last night?
My view is that it needs quite a lot of work still!! (If they ever do it again!)
It looked foggy on the outer edges (though was explained away as protection for the lens and the wearer). It felt like I was in a first person shoot-em-up (albeit an HD one) with an extremely narrow field of vision, controlled by a very nervous 13 YO boy who knew he shouldn't be playing a +18 game and thought that his parents would walk in at any moment. Or that may have just been Kurt Gidley.
I thought the way the producer handled the cut away's to show the 5 seconds of "Call of RL" was a bit pants to be honest.
I think with improvement of the view it would be better and I would largely use it as a 'highlights reel' at half time/full time etc. rather than cut away action when the ball is out of play. Simply because the production team can then choose the better clips and maybe create a montage.
Certainly wouldn't miss it, if it never appeared again.

It was the first time out for a new thing.
Needs work, but let's give them a few matches to tweak it before we decide.
It highlights the speed of the game, when everything through it seems so rushed. Shows us how little thinking time these players actually have.
Fullback would have been the most interesting player to wear it. I imagine that's why they gave it to Gidley first up. Shame he got pulled into the halfback role instead.

I thought the idea was great but delivery was awful and definitely needs a lot of development. They should trial it quietly, develop it and relaunch later in the season. I would also like to see a camera suspended across the stadium that would give you birds-eye view of the plays.I suspect that the costs would be prohibitive; but Sky do have deep pockets.

A tad off topic I know but I have never understood in today's technology obsessed coverage why a tracker hasn't been placed on the ball so that it's movement can be traced, Sky might then have to finally admit that Kevin Brown is indeed a quarter back and throws the ball forward with gay abandon.
Think the player cam is an advance too far, I just want to watch a game, what could be contentious was if an infringement was spotted on it, could it be punished and then could the other team argue that one (or all) of their players should be wearing it for fairness.

I haven't seen how it did or didn't work but it sounds to me like another half baked idea. We've not even got video refs at all SL games yet so I won't be expecting to see this fully developed in my life time.
Like the idea of a overhead cam mentioned earlier. Shouldn't be too expensive to install in the grand scheme of things but would be tricky to suspend from stands of differing heights and get the required angle I would have thought.

Sorry I just realised I asked for fairness in RL.

Sorry I just realised I asked for fairness in RL. You should know better than that. All men are equal but some are more equal than others remember

At the NRL Nines, a drone was used to get the arial shots, operated by three guys in a tent outside the ground, great idea and means that no expensive installations are needed at the grounds.

I did wonder about that when watching the coverage, the conclusion was that it wouldn't work at Salford, simple reason that when there is a merest zephyr anywhere near the stadium it turns into a howling gale at the ground (let's hope today there's a wailing Gale). Have often wondered why the stadium management don't plant some fast growing big trees behind the south stand to try and defeat the impact this has, but maybe that's just me using common sense again.

Probably wouldn't be used here at the Westpac in Wellington for exactly the same reason!!
