Merry Xmas everyone, it is very quiet on here but I thought I'd ask a question... Who will our Wingers be in 2024. It looks like Burgess may well leave the club, though they have said nothing on his disciplinary situation. We have both Ryan and MacDonald who can play Wing, with Hankinson and Cross able to cover the position. Leeds yesterday stated (Rowan Smith) they are not singing Lee Kershaw, we are in for a Winger, I think Salford will sign Kershaw as a free agent in the next two weeks.
Therefore in 2024 our wingers will be Ryan/Kershaw and MacDonald (That is assuming Burgess is released). At 24 I'd be happy with Kershaw and prefer to use our remaining quota spot on a Prop. All in all a backline 1-5 as below is pretty decent.
Brierley Ryan Cross / Hankinson Lafai MacDonald

Unfortunately we’re very sr heavy again. Think hankinson will come in very handy

We've lost Rhys Williams who was at the end of his career, we had Costello for 3 years who never played. Last year we played a full season without Dan Sarginson. Sio hardly ever missed a game which is why we had continuity. I think our backline can get stronger if we sign another couple of players.

Well we were going into the season with burgess sio Ryan McDonald’s Lafai cross now we’ve lost 2 top wingers (unfortunately) but I do seriously worry we won’t be able to field a team. We have 22 players which for a top flight sports side is shocking

Other alternative - move Stone to centre. So McDonald on one wing Cross/ Ryan on the other. Gives Hankinson and Cross or Ryan as back up.
Also allows us to use our best second rows together - Wright and Watkins.
Hopefully last quota spot could be used for a middle.

He’s very tall and I wonder if more elusive players would have him over. Agree on a middle though we’ve been desperate for a long time

We are actively looking for a Winger I know that much, as I said I think Kershaw will sign for the club in the next two weeks. Agree about a big spot, funds permitting use the quota. There must be someone out there?

Hopefully there’s a few bust ups in other teams

Of course you always need depth for a stupidly long season but 5 players for 4 births means you're excluding available alternatives like Watkins.
Half the time having depth just means players pass away their careers waiting to play then being pushed aside the moment their prefered player returns.
This means the best place to look for signings is always among the reserve group who are far too good to be there.
Top clubs tend to be the hoarders of players like this and is one of the main reasons we don't have a competitive league from top to bottom.

Your definitely right about top clubs hoarding players might help they have academy where as we don’t and we don’t seem keen on playing any of our reserves(rowls mustn’t rate them)

There is a universe of difference between reserve grade and SL so even if Rowles thought they were great he'd be either foolish or mistaken to put them in apart from the odd cameo.

Which is the problem. We have no production line like top clubs. I would like to know exactly why the rfl didn’t allow us an academy. We will never really grow without one

We will never really grow without one I've said this before if their production lines are as wonderful as they're made out why do they need to sign so many from outside?
The RFL is preventing SRD from improving, what possible motivation could they have for that?

That’s sports for you mate you sign the best you can. It’s delusional to think Wigan don’t have a great academy half are players come from there . But as you say I don’t the the reason but without one we are always going to struggle
