He's not reporting anything new which is no surprise. Slow news day = let me try and dig something out about Salford to fill the void. Now he could've reported about how the club have brought in some (on paper) great looking board appointments to help shape the vision but nope he's just churned out more pointless "filler". The guy's just not very good at his job (I hope he doesn't actually earn a decent living from this).

Don’t really understand the anger aimed at Matthew Shaw. Journos job is to ask difficult questions not just publish good news stories that clubs want out there. One of the reasons rugby league is in such a state is that trade journalists don’t ask enough tough questions about the commercial and business elements of the clubs and governing body.

One of the reasons rugby league is in such a state is that trade journalists don’t ask enough tough questions about the commercial and business elements of the clubs and governing body. I think a lot of people have issue, not around what you are saying, but that there is a massive bias when it comes to Yorkshire clubs and those outside of Yorkshire. Negative stories are almost exclusively written about based on this. Or the language used is always bent in that direction. My issue is with RL 'Journalism' in general at the moment. Like most news media it's being filtered down a predominantly social media lens where clicks equals advertising income. A prime example of this was when Shaw wrote about the Dupree incident. He formed a headline that conflated two stories (Dupree thing and Salford raising money) to suggest that both were linked, even though he knew otherwise. It's dirty journalism, and while it's annoying for Salford fans (with regards to this example) those reading who don't have all the facts then perpetuate the misleading story as fact. This is a problem in many areas, and Mathew Shaw just happens to be my example here. I'm not saying he's the sole instigator, just that there's a deeper problem in general. Decent publications in the past, have become shadows of themselves now that their business model has shifted from paper sales to online content. Sad but not surprising.

Although my slight concern here is that there is a vast difference between assuming that this is a failure and it actually being one.
He does try to walk the tight rope there and I might be too suspicious at times.

I don't think it's Shaw in particular and I do understand the cynicism around journalism generally.

Decent publications in the past, have become shadows of themselves now that their business model has shifted from paper sales to online content. Sad but not surprising. The growth in the relationship between journalism and clickbait is mostly negative because positivity doesn't provide clicks.
Having said that LoveRL and a few other places are good in ways that say a forum like Total can never be. Although both are very representative of our community of RL fans at least journos try to examine what's going on rather than a flood of negativity based on beggar all!
And when compared with national journalism from the legacy media where the proportion of privately educated and well off hacks who are co-conspirators with Westminster they don't really rate on the Richter scale of poor journalism.
One example was a story I heard the other day where a writer and photographer arranged to meet up at Rees-Moggs place to do a story on him and when the camera man arrived and knocked the writer answered the door in a dressing gown. Nothing biased there at all, everything perfectly normal.
The thing is we need to ask questions about RL stories because far too many about SRD are really negative, and the assumption among many fans on forums like Total is that we have no right to be there even when we're in 4th position in SL or maybe especially because of that.
