Seems the NRL have been proactive in adjusting the 6 again rule. It is no longer given in your own 40, instead you get a proper penalty and the opportunity to kick to touch. It's an excellent change for me. I'm not really a fan of the 6 again but especially hate how you could give a penalty own on purpose to buy time, say on tackle one or two, deep in your opponents territory without fear of giving away extra territory.
I'd like to see this brought in here. Plus the captain's challenge for TV games.

I don’t like the 6 again rule as it feels too arbitrary and crucially fans at the game rarely know what it’s for. On the TV at least you can hear the ref’s explanation. The problem is if it’s interpreted like it is now that making it a penalty again will be worse because it will give teams 20m up the pitch too
I think the problem is that there is too much emphasis on the technical ‘hand on ball’ which barely slows down play where wrestling on the floor is allowed much more. It’s more like how the Aussies ref where there is more messing at the ruck than English refs used to allow. Giving teams 20m for hand on ball would be a farce.

All the 6 agains used to be full penalties but in order to speed the game up they brough in the 6 again rules for ruck infringements. They haven't brought in a new set of rules. They just downgraded ruck infringements from a full penalty to 6 again for speed. It's a shut rule into. A penalty is a penalty. Slowing the PTB is a foul just as stripping the ball is. Except now, the first is a 6 again and the second a full penalty. In the past both were full penalities. We were under immense pressure against Warrington and were given a 6 again on the first tackle on our 25/30m. It's ridiculous that we couldn't take a breather, kick to touch and gain 20m down field. Instead we gained 1 extra tackle and Warrington were able to get their players back and set their line.
I want the rule gone and full penalties brought back but that won't happen. At least with what the Aussies have implemented you are able to get out of your territory due to infringment. It's too easy to just lie on on the first or second tackle if they've made a half break and take a set restart to get your defensive shape back with little disadvantage.

I'm kinda torn on this.
I think it can be a decent rule when applied consistently, and stops a lot of infringements at the PTB. However, teams are far too quick to give deliberate six again in safe territory to enable them time to gain cohesion in a defensive line. I also think that the rule can allow one side to get on a steamroll which completely knackers the other side out. It means that it is more likely that teams will run away from a game rather than it be close or significantly alter the flow of a game. Saints against us in the SF last year is a decent example.
It's a tough one because I can see why the six again came into existence. Too much gamesmanship from teams forced their hands. I think the biggest issue is that no matter how many rules you change or adapt, teams will still try to find an advantage in some way.

They should have just penalised the gamesmanship. We are so lax with some things and hugely inconsistent with others. It amazes me, the gulf on quality, between officials here and in the NRL. What are they doing differently in their training and approach? Or is it to do with directives from those in-charge?
Agreed on the deliberate plays. The deliberate six-agains are frustrating and too easy to giveaway, especially early in sets and deep in your opponents territory. It ends up given the defence an advantage where they choose to do it on purpose, such as a half-break on a ball shift and then being out of position. Just lie on top for six-again. I like how in Oz, if it's in your own 40m that you get a full penalty instead, with the chance to gain 20m, even 30m.
To be honest I don't really like it anywhere on the pitch. Say you are near the opponents line and would love to go for two points but you can't. What if there's a minute to go in a level game and your threatening their line, they can just slow the play and give six-agains. That wouldn't happen with a full penalty as they know you'll go for two. I think this whole emphasis os speeding up a game that is already fast is a stupid reason for changing rules. I'm sure ab attacking team would prefer to have a full penalty to gain yardage or have the option of taking two, almost every time.

We would have been beaten even more comfortably last night if all the 6 agains against us had been full penalties. I well remember that they used to be full penalties and pretty much the same complaints about inconsistency were levelled then. Penalties being kicked to win games when a knackered defender in the 78th minute takes a few seconds longer to stand up. There’s no perfect solution. As I say I think if they continued to interpret the interference rule like they are now and gave full penalties for almost unnoticeable ‘hand on ball’ offences it would drive fans even more mad. That’s not a new rule but is a change in how they now ref it NRL changed the rule last year. Not sure it made a huge difference to fairness or how watchable it was last season to be honest

I just don't think that defences should be able to gain an advantage from giving away a penalty. It's a terrible rule for me. I'd rather go back to full penalty. I don't understand the obsession with speeding up the game. It's fast enough and doesn't make it better. There are so many other things to work on to improve the game.
