I read this earlier and what the agent said is what we all know, decisions are made to benefit clubs and not the sport. Can I blame a chairman for wanting thing to be bias towards or benefit their club, to some degree no, it's their club and business and they want all the advantage they can get. On the other hand, I do blame their selfishness and how it prevents growth and a better competition. Look at something like the salary cap. It's completely weighted in favour of the 'haves'. It works in other sports because everyone can spend the same. Here only some can spend it and then, when they might lose players and talent may disperse, we have other rules to help those teams... dispensation for home-grown players and marquee players. It's not a fair system and will not lead to talent being spread amongst the clubs. The cap here is £2.1m. it's not unfeasible to imagine some teams are spending £3m while others are spending £1m - £1.5m. Wasn't there even a situation where, I think it was Lomax, was getting central money? I may also be totally incorrect here too, but I think, if you pay a player a bonus for an international that a certain amount doesn't count on the cap (that could be totally wrong but it's in me head for some reason).
Even the IMG thing is the same regurgitation of what's happened in the past. What happens if 20 teams end up grade A at some point? Do we invent an A* or A**? What's a pretty stadium got to do with onl field performance? Cas, Wakey etc have earned their positions on the field. Widnes haven't.
I've always been for no promotion and relegation simply because we don't have the player pool for it. Teams need the security of staying in SL and knowing what's funds they are getting. They need time to recruit and put things in place. Look at Toulouse and the trouble they are in. They had to recruit really late for SL, as if often the case for a promoted team, which puts them well behind the 8-ball. Let's say you're team traditionally on the bottom half, like we have been, like Wakey, like Leigh and previously London etc, if you had the security of no relegation you could focus a lot more resources on youth sturtucen and progression which is a very long process that could take a decade to bear real fruit. Don't sign older players at the end of their careers and instead throw some younger lads in. But you can't because you need to just try and stay up, everything is short term. The financial difference between the leagues is huge. If we had a large player pool maybe it wouldn't be so bad but you'd still be recruiting very late and have you teams. I'd like to have seen 14 teams, with Toulouse, and stop P & R. 26 fixtures. A nines tournament mid-season with a trophy and prize money. Maybe build some excitement in pre-season with a tag rugby (avoid injuries and appeal to an addition audience). Both the nines and tag should be on C4. They would provide the chance for additional sponsorship to bring money into the game and garner interest.
