Does anybody know fully how this works? For example, let's say you get injured due to foul play and get treatment. Do you then have to go off for two minutes reducing your team to 12 men? Or is it only if you get injured without fould play and have treatment? To me it seems stupid to punish a player for being genuinely injured.

It was obviously set up to stop teams taking a breather esp in pressure situations; where the physio stops the game the 2 minutes applies but if the ref stops the game it doesn’t apply (possibly with foul play?). The ref also has discretion according to Hicks. So I suppose like most things it partially a judgement call but it would appear that if there’s foul play by an opponent the 2 min doesn’t apply. As usual it’ll baffle us probably.

As I understand it, it is purely the refs call. If he decides the player can get to the touchline for treatment, he shows the green card. The player has to leave for two minutes or be substituted. Don’t think it applies for foul play where a penalty has been awarded.

Thanks both. I heard the ref say "he's obviously injured" about Martin but then sent him off for two mins, which confused me. I thought in that circumstance, since he himself stopped play, he wouldn't have given a green card. Martin got up and played the ball despite being in pain.
