Would have to see the full Squad list however the signings especially Partington and Stone have been solid. The pack was our weakness last year and this has been addressed. Letting Escare go will have created budget.

I may be wrong but an excellent spine, 2 potential backlines and about 3 different packs, never mind permutations should mean being competitive anywhere and everywhere we go as well as in the case of injuries and suspensions. At least on paper.

While it’s a quiet week in the World Cup and we’ve had a few movements confirmed I’ve had a go at trying to put numbers against the whole squad
1 Brierley 2 Sio 3 Cross 4 Lafai 5 Burgess 6 Croft 7 Sneyd 8 King 9 Ackers 10 Ormondroyd 11 Watkins 12 Wright 13 Gerrard 14 Atkin 15 Stone 16 Partington 17 Dupree 18 Greenwood 19 Sidlow 20 Williams 21 Lannon 22 Dixon 23 Sarge 24 Addy 25 Costello 26 Borouh 27 Longstaff 28 Hellewell
Might be a couple of the youngsters/reserves with squad numbers too?
I’ve mostly given existing players numbers higher than newbies where they are in similar positions and quality. Some questions:
- will Partington mainly be a prop or loose? Will get 8/10/13 ahead of one or the incumbents? - Will Watkins keep his number 3 shirt even though most likely to stay in back row? - will Stone get a number in top 13? - will Wright be considered a starter, if so will he mainly be thought of as 8/10/11/11/13?
Of course squad numbers mean very little these days, esp for props and 2nd row, but does give an insight into coaches thinking. And I think a number in top 13 is still seen as a ‘reward’ for good performance unless they have a reason not to - Sarge with 23 and Hastings 31 for instance

Who is the 13?, seems the difficult question as well as the most important one.
Which of our forwards can do big minutes will be crucial too.

From what I've seen I'd have to ask if he's the top candidate for the position?

It’s not loose forward anymore Russ; apparently teams play 3 middles…8,10,13 early on and he’s one of them…and two wide forwards effectively extra centres 11,12 along with the spine 1,6,7,9. The centres 3, 4 and wingers 2,5 are old school
Ask Watson as he goes thro his ‘process’
I suddenly realised this when we played at Bradford few years ago heading towards the £1m game and Morley played loose forward…not the fastest player on the field and. Bradford hammered us with speed

Bradford hammered us with speed I understand your argument but who is most likely to provide best within the spine in the loose position?
Who covers best in defence and who has the best off load ratio? And are they the same person?

Bit beyond me Russ but what I did see yesterday was the power and strength of the Oz second rowers…they were match winners I think that's not the first time you've suggested you can't can't see it and I don't believe that for a minute.
Those second rowers were good, it has to be said, but against a side not at it's best on the day.
