The trouble with these kind of stats is that they are easily skewed if you have one data point that is far to either side of the scale. One really young player, or one much older artificially inflates or deflates the overall. We're a good case in point for this. We have the youngest side we've had for decades yet the overall figure sits at 27.8, probably solely because of Kevin Brown.
Not sure what value knowing these figures has anyway to be honest as there's very little between top and bottom and it's not like GF winning teams never had older players or indeed very young players. Think it's just a way for some fans to claim some kind of superiority over others in a different way.

From what I have seen, a lot of clubs have included half a dozen or so youth players in their squad who probably won’t get a game. And, in any case, I would have thought that at age 27/28 players are in their prime. So we will finish 2nd behind Leigh.

As Camster mentioned, and anyone who has done any statistics knows, if you have extreme outliers in a dataset it can be skewed one way or another. Ignoring the top and bottom 10% would give you a much better indication. Salford have Kevin Brown and Krisnan at the top end of the scale still playing, whereas Saints, Wigan and Hull have lost James Graham, Sean O'Loughlin and Gaz Ellis respectively. Ignoring the top and bottom two players would give a far better indication of the average age of the playing squad. It would also be a lot closer.
