The game is so much faster these days that I think the flair element of half back and stand off has been nullified. We are seeing the 3 pivot play with the fullback becoming more and more prevalent. I am sorry to disagree with you.And I know everything wasn't good in the past. You say the game is faster I will say this the Salford team of the seventies would have beat that team we put out at Hull KR by 50 points take my word for it.You mention any half back playing in Super League now Alec Murphy was better on one leg something else you can take my word for the greatest half back we have ever produced in fact he would probably still be better now even though he is in is seventies

The flair players just don't make it any more, it is almost trained out of them. Rangi is an example, his type just don't fit anymore. Which is a shame.

Spot on about Alex Murphy. I think your 70's red tinted specs have let you down a bit the team of the seventies was prone to meltdowns, errors, defensively suspect. down right lazy at times and frustratingly indifferent on many an occasion. The team that played HKR makes very few errors and doesn't give up but sometimes doesn't turn up and exposes even good defensive sides frailties. It would have been a close high scoring game between them but the margin would never have been fifty. And the game is far quicker now.😄

[ It's the speed of defensive structures that are nullifying the flair types. Defenders are up quick to the attacking line and making it difficult for opponents to find the time and space to show the flair they undoubtedly have.

"Dixon and Coulman were faster than any forward that we still have...."
That may be so, and is debatable, but quite often they didn't turn up, either one or both of them and Colin was by far my favourite player.

That team was,of course, brilliant. The meltdowns tended to be against big hairy arsed opposition, generally Castleford. Dixon and Coulman famously didn't seem to get on. The cup tie where one broke through and, with only the full back to beat, wouldn't pass to the other,on his outside, was testament to that. Colin Dixon was a great forward and Mike Coulman the fastest I've seen for a man of his size but quite gentle until you wound him up. Great to remember them.

It's always brilliant to remember them bonita yes they were excellent but I like to see things as they actually were not as I'd like them to have been, and they were good when defences weren't that good. And Dixon was by far the best forward on his day and should have had more caps with the possible exception of Reilly, or maybe not! And I don't believe for one moment with less line breaks available they'd have put 50 on the present team. Mostly I remember being squashed in at the Willows to watch them. Especially when told by those men not to stand on the coloured area bits and who'd then stand in the coloured area bits to watch the match? ?

A friend of mine and still a season ticket holder. Was walking round a super market in Rochdale a couple of months back.Who should he bump into Mike Coulman they got chatting and Mike invited him round to his home for a coffee and a chat about the his career in union and at the Red Devil's and is memories of Brian Snape.I know one or two might think I'm in the past but I will tell you he had a great time.
