I watched last Saturdays nail biter again yesterday in a sober and coherent state. Did anyone clock that we missed 3 out of the 4 conversions? We all know it's so important to have a decent kicker and despite obriens heroics, I don't see him as the answer. Many times this season it was shared between dobbo n gaz depending which side but can you imagine if we had a kicker at RU standard? What makes them so much better and who in RL could be our answer?

That's a very valid point. There's not too many playing league that kick as well as their union playing counterparts. The only reason I can come up with for it is that maybe union kickers must spend a lot more time working on it at junior level. Union games are won and lost on the strength of a kick a lot more than league games. Quite a lot of international games only see points scored from kicks.

Unless we get a kicker who can nail 80% or thereabouts, I would be happier if GOB takes them from the left and Dobbo from the right. At the end of 80mins Dobbo was better placed (percentages) to nail that conversion.

I'm not sure GOB's conversion rate is anywhere near that...Infact is there anyway of finding that out? Any full on statertition put me right here?

I'd like to see us take Mantellato from KR. He's an excellent kicker and can play at wing or fullback.

Thanks for that chico, not brilliant tho is it especially when you consider we outscored HKR 4 tries to 3 and what could have happened. I'd take mantellato in a heart beat btw

Trouble is, kicking ability is retrospective with regards to how well or not players are at it. While a high percentage is certainly an advantage over a season it still doesn't guarantee players make the crucial kicks at the crucial time. We decide that looking back and deciding what was crucial. We often don't know at the time.
I think we have decent options already and if we bring another in then great. If we don't then I wont lose sleep over our options. We'd all like a JT quality kicker, but only the Cowboys have that luxury.
Also, a players percentage is likely to be lower when kicking duties are shared. The highest percentage kickers at any RL Club are those with sole responsibility for kicking duties.

And don't forget you score the majority of your tries through the middle they are easier to convert, when we have been at our best this year it has been getting the ball out to the flanks at the end of long flowing passing moves, prime example the 2 kicks GOD missed at the end of regulation play against Hull KR. Both of those under the posts and all things being equal he would have converted them.

I believe given that you have two kickers, one left, one right footed and more importantly both kickers that curl the ball (GOB and Dobbo); their own individual percentage rate would increase as they will not contest the most difficult kicks. Just to extend the discussion a little, what about some variation with the kick offs rather than a gentle punt to the left side defence every time.

I'm with you on this wiganred , our kick offs lack imagination. Would be nice to incorporate something different next season.

Who'd a thought he'd team up with the Devils? I always knew he was a socialist but this was news to me!
