"Stevo who is retiring from commentating on Sky Sports after tomorrows Grand final told The Daily Telegraph ” I think it’s Struggling”
“I have no qualms about saying that without Rupert Murdoch’s money, it would have been obliterated. Completely.
“We’re a niche sport. And we’re a northern sport, whether we like it or not.”
HE TOLD THE TELEGRAPH! Surely that newspaper that has done so much to champion RL in the past will distance themselves from statements like this and print a retraction.
So Stevo, exactly how did you think this would help the cause of Rugby League that you profess to love so much?

He's always been good at sounding off. I don't know anyone who enjoys his commentary so I doubt he'll be missed. I didn't know they held niche sports in sixty odd thousand seater stadiums. Imagine how a fan of curling will feel reading that. He'll probably make a living making after dinner speeches

To be fair Stevo is a good bloke and he's done a hell of lot for the sport over the years. What he's said there isn't great, it's not helpful and I'd prefer positive story from him. Having not read the rest of the story though, maybe he did have more positive things to say?

Having not read the rest of the story though, maybe he did have more positive things to say? I have always thought his passion and support of our game is tremendous but spreading a gospel like this in yawnion's backyard is downright negative which ever angle you look at the picture from. And what do you think top notch sponsors might take away from such an article?

Honestly I don't think sponsors will care, they will only care about viewing figures and how many people their potential product would reach

Going off topic a bit but are Mitsubishi on board for next year? The hybrid match organized by them would suggest so but I can't remember reading how long they signed for last year

Honestly I don't think sponsors will care, they will only care about viewing figures and how many people their potential product would reach I think you're wrong there gadger. I think RL in this country is a picture painted by it's enemies (competitors) in order to limit its progress. And the off topic apart, it makes it harder to compete when even our friends join in with rubbish about our sport.

He has been a wonderful ambassador for the sport and has done great things to preserve the history of the game. Will be sorely missed and God dam did I love Stevo bingo

He has been a wonderful ambassador for the sport and has done great things to preserve the history of the game. Will be sorely missed and God dam did I love Stevo bingo True but that has little or nothing to do with the comments he made but, more importantly where he chose to make them. I'm not so sure if he'll be sorely missed he seems to have more detractors than MK which is amazing! Mind you he doesn't get told to be quiet and more circumspect half as often.

I always quite liked Stevo. He's surely always had his heart in the game. He's not the greatest pundit, but I'd rather have him than the horrible wigmaster.

I always quite liked Stevo. He's surely always had his heart in the game. He's not the greatest pundit, but I'd rather have him than the horrible wigmaster. There's a lot of good things about Stevo related to his love and support of the game. This just makes his parting words all the more lacking and unhelpful. The national dailies don't need help to ridicule, belittle and bash our game. They've had a fair few years practice and are very good at it. The reason Stevo and the rest of us have to defend TGG is because it has been derided so well for so long. I'd go so far as to say if he'd been more positive as he left that wouldn't have been included in the article. Pundits are always going to fall into either pet hate or love categories.
