Sheffield all day long for me. Remember playing golf at Haigh Hall and watching it in a pub nearby, deep in Pie country and cheering on the eagles, lucky to escape with our lives

Sheffield were another top division team. In fact top half of the top division. Wigan hadn’t been in the previous 3 finals and wouldn’t get to another one for another five years. Although they did go on to win SL that year
When we beat wigan we were in the division below and Wigan hadn’t lost in the cup for 9 years and were reigning league champions and cup holders.
No comparison between the scale of the upset that I can see

MR, how dare you! The Sheffield win isn’t anywhere near the same level of upset. The only reason people would vote for that is because it was the final.

Rugby League on the World Service and they went to the end of the match not just the result.
It nearly killed me waiting for the Video me Mam sent me that week and it had a cartoon from the MEN of a Salford fan glazed over smiling and his wife phoning the doctor. And about 15 cuttings. Gotta be shock of forever!

As far as I'm concerned the 1996 victory over Wigan is the biggest upset on the list. Little Salford hammered higher division Wigan who hadn't lost a Cup Tie for ages. I felt as good walking out of the Willows that day as I felt walking out of Wigan after the elimination semi-final last year!!
It's a wonderful feeling too!

Wonderful, think Wigan's unbeaten cup run was about 40 matches For me Dai Young was magnificent, MoM knocked the Wigan forwards all over the show and I seem to remember the scrum pushed Wigan off the ball on their put in with their pack retreating at a rate of knots. Still got the video.

I was working that day and we had Piccadilly radio on... my mate Geoff was shouting score updates across the workshop. It was a very back and forward game and a hell of a feeling when we beat a "much better" Wigan side and ended a historic cup run. That's why I voted for it.
