Reet I've sat and contemplated yesterday and thought I'd share.
It's my first GF (hopefully not my last) and I'll be honest it was slightly disappointing, not Salford or the fans the venue and experience, is it just me or is OT just not a great venue to watch RL?
But enough of that.
Started of in town early doors to soak up the atmosphere and had a whale of a time, got a group of Hull fans to 'gimme 6' which made my day. Went nto Sams Chop House and dressed Lowry up in Salford clobber and had some cracking scran, then id a few boozers and generally had a belting laugh with fans from other clubs.
Ended up before the game in the Matchstickman which was just bedlam, soon learned to go buy the beer in F&B's and drink it outside with everyone, so nice to see some people attending a game I've not seen for a few years, I did think there would be more singing and chanting though.
Headed over to the stadium nice and early and had the ballache of my mates daughter having to trapse to the other side to hand in her (virtually empty) bag in. Got caught out buying beers as only had cash and the kiosk I queued at was card payment only. Got to my seats and the view was outstanding was sitting directly behind the posts. Lots of noise but I think it kind of gets lost in the vastness of the venue.
Got talking to a steward at half time and she was telling me they hate the RL games as everyone is bladdered and there is more trouble than football games (I was surprised at this) and that in a certain section of the ground they were wading in to split up fights and launch people out.
So to the game, ruined as a spectacle by totally inept refereeing, when you are sat as high up as we were you could see the Saints players (and to be fair Salford ones occasionally) 2 yards in front of the ref while stood right next to him, when you narrow the gap in defence so much it is hard to gain any momentum. Think we were much more dangerous when we threw the ball around, think too that JH had a slightly quiet game but Lolohea ad a blinder, again our pack were immense and matched the Saints forwards pretty much all game despite being on the back foot much more. Can't see why it took so long to bring Lussick on as he added so much more go forward then minute he did, our lack of pace was also a factor on such a big pitch against some very speedy Saints backs.
Was sad to see so many future legends leave on a low point and I remain convinced JH will be regretting his decision to go to Wigan even more after experiencing the most special day in a generation in a Salford shirt.
Finally I've been itching to mention this for weeks but didn't want to jinx anyone but I can't remember going through a season with so few injuries in key areas, JH, JL, JJ and Evalds have hardly missed a game and that for me has been crucial.
So a great day, a commendable performance from the team and club as a whole.
