Just noticed Swinton are to rebrand as Manchester. A great move by them and Swintonions seem to regard themselves as Mancunian rather than Salfordians, will it affect us ?

I’m yet to see why it’s a ‘great move’ - alienated a chunk of a smaller fan base than ours and hope to attract extra people (once they’ve recovered the alienated fans) to a lower league team based on a name change and some marketing? We’ll see but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Just noticed Swinton are to rebrand as Manchester. A great move by them and Swintonions seem to regard themselves as Mancunian rather than Salfordians, will it affect us ? More importantly from the Board statement is the following "central funding decreases post-2021", could this mean that the RFL have communicated with the clubs that they believe there will be less broadcast revenue come 2021? - I'm only speculating but if that's the case it would be an absolute embarrassment to have given up on getting a better TV deal with 2 years still to play with. "It is clear that with the highly probable central funding decreases post-2021, a stagnant home fan attendance, and a consistent failure to meet the RFL key funding objectives, that it is imperative that the Board act now to give the Lions not only the best chance of survival, but also to grow and be a force in the game."swintonlionsrlfc.co.uk/news/board-statement-the-future/With regards to the name change, I believe this is positive move for the sport and the club having Rugby League represented by another major city. At least now we'll be able to see if it ever works out with Swinton as opposed to Salford changing their name which was flirted with by Koukash a few years ago.

Will be interesting to see if this works out.
Also to see what reaction Dr K has to this, maybe he'll get involved as this was obviously his end game.

I hope I'm wrong in that it may affect us, Manchester will attract a larger focus especially if they eventually change to a yellow and black kit. Short term it maybe a struggle and I'm sure Swinton fans will roll with it, they've had harder times and still turn up (with many Union fans of Sale). Since we left The Willows the AJ Bell has struggled to create a new home for us, although when we get 3k the place is a joy. As a Mancunian my allegiance will always be to Salford (born in Irlam when it was Manchester) it's in my heart. One day Salford v Manchester could be a Grand Final

Dreadful idea. Good to see a large percentage of their fans opposing it.
The worst part is the killing off of the potential move back to M27, which has now been binned in favour of a Manchester name playing in Cheshire.
The only person to benefit from this will be the chairman.

Bring back Malcom White 😂 It was Malcolm White who back in the day registered the name Manchester so that no other club other than Swinton could use it

they will still be playing in Sale, will people be willing to travel to sale just because the clubs renamed? Moving to Manchester would of been a better option people aren't just going to flock there just because of a rename, badge looks weird With Manchester wrote on it though least they are keeping the original swinton badges etc

I think it's a shame that Swinton will change its name. They've been a historic founding RL club. Club name changes are not unusual if you look at the history of all RL clubs. Most have changed their names at some point. I can also understand that Swinton want to try and stimulate interest and rebuild. It's worth a try. What's the worst than can happen? They can always change it back.

Wonder if Manchester Rangers might feel a little aggrieved at this?
I'll be honest when you see how Hemel have had their franchise bought by the Ottawa consortium you worry that if any money men come in from say New York looking to pay decent till struggling teams are going to be tempted to take the cash. My guess would be North Wales would be the most at threat but if the traditional Swinton fans stop attending and there are no new fans then Manchester/Swinton might well be at risk.
