Can a Salford statistician / historian advise me about fixtures played between Salford FC and Manningham FC (of Bradford). My understanding is that the clubs met only twice, home and away in April 1897 in friendly games. The first, on Good Friday was won by Swinton at Valley Parade but the return game in Swinton the following day was abandoned whilst the teams were drawing. Manningham converted to soccer as Bradford City AFC in 1903 and left the Northern Union. Although Swinton played Bradford FC (who were based at Park Avenue) on a regular basis from 1886 I have found no detail of a pre-NU game between Salford and Manningham.

Darrell Platt's book "A history of Salford Rugby League Club" has a section which lists Salford's record against every club from 1896 onwards but there is no mention of Manningham.

I'm still lost as to which club you're actually after information on, given that you start by suggesting Salford and Manningham met twice, but then referencing that by talking about games between Manningham and Swinton or Bradford v Swinton

It doesn’t appear that they met between 1879 to 1892. Salford were in the Lancashire County League between 1892–96, so unlikely. It’s highly unlikely they would have met in 1895–96, even in a friendly, as Salford was still affiliated to the RFU. 1896–1902 were county championships, so again less likely. That‘s not to say they never met, but you may need to trawl the newspapers – Salford Reporter, Salford Chronicle. Manchester Evening News, Athletic News etc. etc. The British Library Newspaper Archive have certain issues of the MEN and Athletic News that may cover the period you need. Yorkshire Post too.
