Russ theirs me thinking it was a serious thread. If that's not the case I really think we finish top and half way through the season Wigan will won't Hastings and we will turn down a million pounds.Yes let's be positive. I'm not sure why you would say it's not serious. I looked at people's thoughts and ideas and summed up what they seemed to be saying. It just struck me that people weren't that confident on the whole and although not sure why, felt the outlook maybe in our minds rather than on the pitch. I wasn't sure if it was pessimism or realism but it wasn't very exciting and at this time of year that seems a bit essential. To be fair, as long suffering Salford fans, it does us no good being overly optimistic. A healthy bit of reservation means that expectations can only rise in conjunction with reality. We're all secretly hopeful of something special, but we all know it would do us no good mentally to chase a blinkered belief without reservation.

That spine is one of the best at SRD for quite some time and certainly one of the best in the comp. A lot of coaches would sell their souls for that spine. A lot of fans at other clubs would be selling husbands and wives for that group of players. They'd certainly be gagging for the start of the new season. But what do we do on Devil talk "Well we might be alright if ...." "I think we might make 9th with a prevailing wind and a slope ...."

Your optimism is to be commended and it's good that we have fans with this kind of outlook. The trouble is, if we all had that kind of optimism we'd be no better than Wigan fans. A fate worse than death, I'm sure you'd agree. I'm happy that we have a sprinkling of positive catalysts among the supporter base. We'll be relying on you a few weeks into the season when Hastings breaks his leg, Sio gets suspended, and Evalds joins Warrington...

I think anyone who thinks we should be winning anything this season needs their bumps reading. Optimism is one thing but we can be optimistic that we will have an entertaining team to watch who can compete with anyone on their day. And that the club is building a genuine community spirit and is enthusing the fan base in a way it hasn’t for about 20 years. Off the pitch the club have long term plans in place that should see us get better every year. That is all really positive and is cause for celebration
But we have a squad of 23 players at the moment. That might be 24 or 25 by season starts. That means players playing week in week out when they’re injured, it means having virtually no cover at half back or, crucially, in the pack. There will be no resting players. Fewer subs allowed will mean more injured forwards. Half a dozen injured players or suspended players and we are struggling to get a team out. And you have to be top 5 this year to be in with a shout rather than top 8
I am convinced that every one of our players will give 100% every time they are picked. Our 1st 17 or 19 can match most of SL (not beat them every week but perform well). We will surprise plenty of teams. our half back pairing means we always be a threat in attack and the team spirit means we will be hard to beat. If we have a miraculous year with injuries and suspensions we will go well. But even if we did end up in top 5 our players will be knackered. The teams with bigger squads and better facilities will be fresher and fitter
I am optimistic and positive about this season. More so than for many years. But i don’t expect us to win anything and I don’t think we should be judging this season on trophies

Are Kyd hits on a good point in that our halves are what will drive the team. I can see teams targeting them, a knuckle dragger like Westwood would feel no guilt in taking either Lui or Hastings out.
I really hope we get this kid from Warrington and he's a bit better than JLJ and the kid from Wigan we got last year.
Think we'll see a move to smaller packs with the reduced interchange, there will be more 2nd rowers doing stints at 8/10 so maybe we have a gem in big Ben and the kid ex of Widnes.

I'm only fascinated by the downward appearance of our outlook. The trouble with it is not that it is not realistic but that it means from start to finish we have low expectations. Mind you that changes to sometimes over confident ones when we have a winning run so it is balanced in an odd way. Now other teams and clubs seem to have a "This is our year" approach to every season and I wondered if that's part of why people turn up.

This is just a quote but reflects the general consensus:
Salford - Another tough season, defied the odds for a while last year but they can’t sustain it as the season wears on = 11th
